A few thousand runners and walkers trek along the coastal trails of Anchorage along the Cook Inlet each summer at the Mayor’s Midnight Sun Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K, which is timed to coincide with the summer solstice, when the longest day of the year brings a full day of sunlight over this subarctic region.

Route information
Marathon
The marathon event is 26.2 miles in length beginning at Bartlett High School and traveling through the eastern foothills and across Anchorage to the Delaney Park Strip finish line. Scenic city bike trails, gravel, rocky, and paved roadways make up this gently rolling to extended downhill course. The race is certified by USA Track and Field and is recognized by the Boston Marathon as a qualifying event. The race start is at 7:30 a.m. All participants must finish the race by 3:00 p.m.
Half Marathon
The Half Marathon (13.1 miles) start and finish will be at the Delaney Park Strip. Half marathon runners will begin on West 9th Avenue and head west then turn south on Stolt Lane and S Street. Runners will then turn west on 11th Avenue which turns into Bootlegger Cove Drive then U Street. Runners will leave U Street and enter the bike path at Westchester Lagoon. The course then proceeds south and west along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail to Earthquake Park where runners leave the bicycle path and proceed along West Northern Lights Blvd/Pt. Woronzof Road. A half mile before West End Road runners will leave Pt. Woronzof Road and follow a ½ mile wooded path back to the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail where they will head back north and east to Westchester Lagoon. Runners will leave the bicycle path at Westchester Lagoon onto Bootlegger Cove Drive and retrace the outbound course back to the finish at the Delaney Park Strip. The Half Marathon starts at 9:00 a.m. All participants must finish by 3:00 p.m.
5k
The 5K start and finish will be at the Delaney Park Strip. Participants will begin on West 9th Avenue and head west then turn south on Stolt Lane and S Street. Runners will then turn west on 11th Avenue which turns into Bootlegger Cove Drive then U Street. Runners will leave U Street and enter the bike path at Westchester Lagoon. The course then proceeds north and east along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail to downtown Anchorage. At the 1.5 mile mark the participants will turn around and follow the same route to the finish at the Park Strip. The 5K begin at 9:15a.m.

Parking Start of Full Marathon: Limited parking available at Bartlett High School, participants and spectators also can park in the Tikahtnu Commons parking lot (south side of Muldoon Road). Start of Half, 5K and Spectator Viewing: Parking is limited around finish area. We advise either walking to Parkstrip, utilizing street parking,(please be courteous and respectful to the neighborhood residence while parking) or parking in 6th Ave Garage which is located north east, about six blocks of park.

Spectator Viewing Point No. 1 (from Bartlett High School)
Turn left on Muldoon Road from the Bartlett High School parking lot. Cross over the Glenn Highway and turn left on Boundary Avenue. Take a left onto Frontage Road and park in the turnout past the power plant. Spectators must walk approximately a quarter of a mile down the gravel road to reach the marathon course.
Spectator Viewing Point No. 2 (from Point One)
Return to Muldoon Road and head south approximately 2.5 miles, turn left at the Pioneer Drive stoplight. Follow Pioneer Drive through the residential subdivision and turn right on Klutina Drive. Follow the gravel road to the pump station and park on the side of the road. Spectators must walk a half mile down the trail to the marathon course. Do not block the gravel road and do not park in the subdivision.
Spectator Viewing Point No. 3 (from Point Two)
From Pioneer Drive, take a left onto Muldoon Road. Muldoon curves west and becomes Tudor Road. Turn left at Boniface Parkway and park in the Alaska State Troopers parking lot. The marathon course runs parallel to Tudor Road; please be careful when turning.
Spectator Viewing Point No. 4 (from Point Three)
Head north on Boniface Parkway until Northern Lights Boulevard, turn left. Continue Westbound on Northern Lights until Bragaw Street, turn right. Follow Bragaw to East 20th and turn right, then make another right turn into the East High School Parking Lot. Walk across Northern Lights at the intersection with Bragaw to the trail and marathon course.
Spectator Viewing Point No. 5 (from Point Four)
Return to westbound Northern Lights Boulevard. Turn right on Lake Otis Parkway and travel one half mile to the Davenport Baseball Fields parking lot. Turn right into the parking area. The trail will be to the north, behind the ball fields.
Spectator Viewing Point No. 6 (from Point Five)
Return to westbound Northern Lights Boulevard, turn right onto A Street. At the bottom of the hill, turn right on East 16th Avenue, then right into the parking lot of Sullivan Arena/Ben Boeke Ice Arena. The Chester Creek Trail/marathon course is south of the parking lot along the treeline. It can be reached via a short paved path between the outdoor hockey rinks and the football stadium.
Spectator Viewing Point No. 7 (from Point Six)
Exit the parking lot turning left on 16th Avenue. Turn right on Cordova and then take a left at the stoplight on 15th Avenue. Follow 15th until reaching I Street, turn right. From I Street, travel three blocks and take a left at 12th Avenue. Follow 12th to N Street and turn left. Continue down N Street and turn right on 15th Avenue. The street parallels the marathon course. Parking is available along the street, but is limited.
Finish line at Delaney Park Strip (from Point Seven)
Return to N Street which ends near the finish line. On street parking is available but may be limited. Please respect the neighborhood and do not block driveways.
