Nice flat, fast course through historic Fort Monroe. Even with 15 mph winds I PRed!  The late start was frustrating, especially because of the conditions.  

I was able to join in on Endeavor Running Company's First Annual Oozlefinch Craft Brewery 10-Mile Race at the historic Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia! It was a sold out race, which amounted to just shy of 550 participants in attendance. Fort Monroe, is a recently decommissioned military base, with rich American history and the largest stone fort built in the US. The views from the course include miles of beaches & boardwalk overlooking the mighty Elizabeth, Nansemond and James Rivers, as well as the Chesapeake Bay. You can also spot many of the 150+ historic buildings still standing today. The fort is on an island, on the north side of the tunnel but the race is early enough that you don't fight any tunnel traffic. The Oozlefinch Craft Brewery was very nice and well-staffed, there were even plenty of food trucks for post-race grub. Because the race is on an island and much of the course follows the perimeter of the island, I would recommend utilizing a drafting strategy and bringing some sunglasses to cut down on the glare off the water. The views are remarkable and the setting is just niche enough that you stay interested the whole time. The course was well-marked with plenty of volunteers and there were a lot of age category awards to be won. All-in-all, it was an incredible race and I'd totally go back to run it again!

This was the inaugural Oozelfinch 5/10 mile run at historic Fort Monroe in Hampton Va. The race follows a scenic course around the Fort with non-stop views of the water. The race was well planned with only a few small mis-cues, and those were probably due to the weather. The week of the race the temps had been in the 60's and 70's and dropped into the 30's the day of the race with winds blowing a steady 10 - 15 mph with gusts up to 20 - 25, which made the run quite interesting. I would absolutely do this race again and would love to do it in either spring or summer as I think with the Fort being right on the water the temps would be great. A sunrise or sunset timed race would be spectacular.
