This race was the best experience I could have hoped for as my first 50k trail race. Orcas Island is pure west coast magic, the course was equal parts challenging and beautiful, the atmosphere created by the event staff and fellow runners was warm and welcoming, and I love my custom thrift store race top--it felt like a special weekend. I quickly lost count (after 12) streams were traversed, I think my 3rd waterfall was spotted, and as I clambered over my 3rd large fallen tree. The power line climb and Mt Constitution are not for the faint of heart and deserve their reputation! Bravo to Rainshadow, you have another big fan.

It was my first ultra race but I don't think I could have asked for a better one. The course was epic, very runable in terms of technical level but super steep uphills at times. We knew it though. :) The organizers were more than nice, really eager to help. Everything from bib pickup to post race party meal and beers were hats off, so well organized.I not only would but certainly will do this race again next year! It was a unique place with awesome people. Let's keep it going for many more years!

Fun race. The community is awesome and the post event food, beer and atmosphere is really fun. The race is tough but it has some great trails through the beautiful PNW forests and the views from Mt. Constitution are breathtaking.

Rainshadow Running's February Orcas Island races have become a tradition. You never know what the weather's going to be like in February but you can be certain you'll be challenged and that you'll have fun. Plus, your race entry includes beer, pizza, and bluegrass at the finish! This year, my third time starting (and second time completing) the 50k was no different. It was great to see such a competitive women's field with the podium positions swapping right through the final descent. Technical trails and tons of climbing (and descending) don't make this an easy race so I was glad I trained through Christmas. No snow on the course this year (unlike last year) but plenty of puddles. Kudos to the Rainshadow team for another well-organized race!

The course is a tough one. 8400 feet of elevation gain AND loss! Don't forget about those downhills! The atmosphere surrounding the whole weekend was lively, and friendly. Everyone was hanging out in the Ferry line waiting to cross, before, during, and after the race. Beautiful Scenery, Challenging Course, and Excellent Atmosphere make this race a must do.

Overall it was a great experience. The course was tough. I expected steep climbs, but a couple of these were straight up. Definitely challenging since my lower back was so much in pain, but I pushed through. I loved the food at the end and the shirt, but thought the shirt at $50 was expensive. I normally pay less than $15 as part of the race swag.

Rainshadow events are the BEST! Great course and aid. Super gorgeous island. Amazing pizza and beer after. What more is there?!

It was a really tough course but Rainshadow events are always a pleasure to be a part of - whether as a runner or volunteer. I swore to myself that I wouldn't ever sign up for a winter 50k again but I'm already seriously reconsidering that because it was such a great event. The Orcas 50k is a fabulous mix of kick-in-the-teeth climbs, fun technical descents and beautiful flow-y single-track, all tied up with the great big bow that is James Varner's great organization and Rainshadow's laid-back vibe.

First 50K couldn't have been better! Super challenging course but well marked and supported in the right places.
