Route information
**50K Ultra
**The 50K begins early with an easy 2-mile jaunt through the Paiute Meadows Area, with towering pines, soft meadow grass and the gentle downhill along Bagwell Springs Creek. At the 2 mile mark, runners turn up Old Paul Bunyan Logging Road for a couple hundred yards where they’ll turn a slight left as race the switchbacks to the old CalFIRE helipad to watch the sunrise. Come down the “ramp” make your way along Lower Paiute Creek Trail back to Old Paul Bunyan to head up the Paiute Creek Canyon. Keep a good pace up the gentle incline of Old Paul Bunyan Logging road. Traverse the length of a dry creek bed, next to Paiute Creek and you’ll emerge at the base of Desmond Meadows. Veer right onto a logging road for about a half mile and drop down on the single track inside the Meadows. Get ready for 2 water crossings and the single track will dump you out on the Baja Way Logging road. You’ll be treated to Aid Station # 1 while up in this neck of the wood, but don’t stay too long, you have a ways to go. Finish the Loop of Desmond Meadows back onto Old Paul Bunyan and re-traverse the dry creek bed. As soon as you soon as you leave the dry creek bed. Prepare for your sharp left, down across Paiute Creek and you’ll be rewarded by the nice roller coaster downhill of the Canyon trail, just on the other side of Paiute Creek. Stop for a snack or stick your toes in the water at the Beaver Pond aid station #2 (only #1 for the half), before heading up Beaver Trail to some spectacular views of the valley. While there are numerous benches scattered around at all of the best vista points, resist the urge to sit. Travel the switchbacks up to the top of Lazy Lizard and enjoy the flight back down to the top of Coyote Bluff Trail. After crossing the Bagwell Creek Bridge, shoot back to the start to check in at Aid Station #3 and then head up Heart Attack Hill to the wonders of the Upper Trails. Like a rollercoaster, these trails will take you from west to east, past 3 more Aid Stations. Through Lava Flows and mountain bikers' playgrounds, you'll finally hit the Best Trail Ever for an exhilarating ride, capped by gorgeous views. Once you reach the Landing at the top of Heart Attack, it's one last bobsled ride down the mountain to the finish!
**Half Marathon
**The Half Marathon begins with an easy 2-mile jaunt through the Paiute Meadows Area, with towering pines, soft meadow grass and the gentle downhill along Bagwell Springs Creek. At the 2 mile mark, runners turn up Old Paul Bunyan Logging Road and head up the Paiute Creek Canyon. Keep a good pace up the gentle incline of Old Paul Bunyan Logging road and you’ll be rewarded by the nice roller coaster downhill of the Canyon trail, just on the other side of Paiute Creek. Stop for a snack or stick your toes in the water at the Beaver Pond aid station #1 before heading up Beaver Trail to some spectacular views of the valley. While there are numerous benches scattered around at all of the best vista points, resist the urge to sit. Travel the switchbacks up to the top of Lazy Lizard and enjoy the flight back down to the top of Coyote Bluff Trail. After crossing the Bagwell Creek Bridge, hang a sharp left up Bagwell Springs trail to the top of Bullyvard. From there it’s like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, through Scrap Iron Trail, until you reach the base of Heart Attack (yeah, it’s really called that because of a REAL heart attack!) and Aid Station #2. Switchback your way 1 mile up Heart Attack Hill, catch the view as you turn around, but don’t lollygag because the turnaround downhill finish is fast and furious!
**4.5 Mile Run
**Beginning and ending in the Main Entrance to Susanville Ranch Park, this race starts with an easy 2-mile wind through the Paiute Meadows Area. After cresting Stonewall trail, enjoy the towering pines, soft meadow grass, and the gentle downhill along Bagwell Springs Creek, within cheering distance of the start, and down the Dairy Trail through an apple orchard. At the 2 mile mark, runners turn up Old Paul Bunyan Logging Road and head up the Paiute Creek Canyon. Before you get too far, split off to the right, cross over Paiute Creek, through the top of the meadows and reach the bottom of the locally- dreaded Coyote Bluff. Head up and over Coyote Bluff, back through the towering pines to Stonewall trail. As soon as you get comfortable on Stonewall’s gentle downhill and cross Bagwell Springs Creek again, feel the burn but pick up your feet for the final fast climb up Horse Trail. Before you know it, you’ll reach the turn toward home. The all-downhill path to the end will give you just the speed you need to raise the cheers at the finish!
