About this event

For over 40 years, Save Mount Diablo has worked tirelessly to preserve and increase the open space on and around Mount Diablo. In that time, their efforts have taken us from 6,788 acres of open space to over 100,000 acres of open space on and around the mountain! With distances suitable for everyone, from those hitting the trails for the first time to experienced ultra runners, the Diablo Trails Challenge was created to help celebrate and support these achievements. A portion of all entry fees will go to Save Mount Diablo to help them continue preserving open space and trails for all of us to enjoy.

We don’t care if you are fast or slow, big or small, young or old. We aren’t the beautiful people you might see in a shoe commercial on TV. We never will be. We’re just everyday people who have discovered the happiness that running can bring. If you have the guts to get off the couch, get outside and run or walk at least 5K (3.1 miles), we are ready for you.

Route description
Route description

The longer you go, the more you see and experience! Courses are all on dirt trails, heading out from Castle Rock Park in Walnut Creek, heading into Mount Diablo State Park – all the way to the summit for the 50K. The 50K, half marathon and 10K include sections of single track.

Each course will be marked with colored ribbons, signs, and flour. Runners unfamiliar with the courses should carry a copy of the course map to ensure they stay on course.

Logistics and schedule

Raceday Registration:

It is possible that the race is 100% sold out before race day. Updates will be posted on the race website. If you do not see the race noted as sold out here or on the race home page, you will be okay to sign up on race morning, starting at 6:10 a.m. Race day registration is an additional $5 from the final online registration price.

Bib Pick-Up:

Runners have three options for picking up their bibs and shirts:

1. Mail-out service (available for a fee when registering).
2. If you registered before midnight on Sunday, April 5, your bib and shirt can be picked up at Forward Motion Sports in Danville on Thursday, April 9 (10 am - 7 pm) or Friday, April 10 (10 am - 3 pm).
3. Pick up on race morning (not recommended).

In order to avoid race morning stress and avoid having to arrive even earlier, we strongly recommend choosing options 1 or 2. If you are unable to take advantage of those first two options, race morning pick-up will still be available, but you should aim to arrive 70-90 minutes ahead of your race start to account for lines.

Time Limits:

The 50K will start at 6:30 am and the course will have a time limit of 11 hours.

All runners must also reach and depart the aid stations below before the noted times –

Curry Point (mile 15.6): 11:30 am

Summit (mile 19): 1:30 pm

Juniper (mile 25.5): 3:30 pm

Pacers will be allowed for the 50K runners, starting at the Curry Point aid station (mile 15.6). All pacers are required to check in at the aid station and sign a waiver. There is no transportation provided for pacers.

Water Stations:

Water stations will be stocked with water, sports drink, gels, pretzels, candy, etc.

We recommend all 10K and half marathon runners carry at least 2 bottles or a large hydration pack (or both).

Please note that all 50K water stations will be cupless. 50K participants must carry a hydration pack and/or water bottles.

The 50K water stations, their distance into the race and their cut-off times are as follows –
