Course Details

Summit Bechtel Reserve is widely known for its natural beauty, its unbeatable white-water rafting, and the fact that every four years, its 10,000+ acres of pristine land play host to the National Boy Scouts Jamboree. This year, SBR's rolling hills welcome a different kind of gathering: their third Spartan Race.

Top Reasons to Take on this Course:

1. The Boy Scouts of America have turned SBR into the capital of outdoor adventure. Enjoy kayaking, hiking, mountain-biking, and zip-lines in southern West Virginia.
2. As one of four facilities managed by the National Council of Boy Scouts of America, SBR is a hallmark of American sustainability and preservation. Their Sustainability Treehouse is equipped with a rainwater recovery system and a full-blown wind-powered generator.
3. SBR's vast array of hills, steep inclines, water features and technical terrain will test your athleticism like nothing else.
4. After taking in the view from the summit, you can see SBR's stunning landscape from another point of view: looking down from the 800-foot-long Triple Walkway Suspension Bridge.

Kit List

DO Bring:

  • ID
  • Barcode

DO NOT Bring:

  • Outside food and drink (fuel for the race is OK)
  • Pets
  • Negative attitude

What to wear:

We recommend dressing in performance gear (NOT COTTON). Think compression tights or shorts and breathable tops made from water wicking material. Wear shoes with good traction that you’ve trained in. We have some great trail shoes in our Shop. In addition to your clothes, consider fuel when planning for race day. We strongly suggest wearing a hydration pack and carrying energy gels or Clif bars. Again, train with the same fuel you plan on using during the race. We have all you need to gear up for race day at the Spartan Shop.

If the event is less than a month away, you will see various volunteer shifts and times posted. Choose your preferred shift (you must be able to stay the duration of the shift as listed). You will receive final details regarding the shift that you choose the week of the event.

If the event is more than a month away, you will see a general interest sign up link. When you sign up under this link, you are pre-registering to volunteer and will receive a communication from the Volunteer Coordinator about 4-6 weeks before the event with instructions on how to choose your specific volunteer shift day and time.

We know many of you volunteer to race at the event. Please note that for most events you can expect the follow race options: Build Shift- race either morning or afternoon for either day of the event. Sprint- Race same day you volunteer before or after your volunteer shift or volunteer any day before or following your volunteer shift. Super and Beast- Same day racing is only an option when you volunteer before you race; you may also volunteer the day before or after you race. During registration you will find the race options within the title of the shift and your exact race options will be noted in your Final Confirmation E-mail, sent to you a few days prior to race weekend.
