The course is one of the most challenging and the weather is always wintery. But the crows are amazing

This is a very tough, hilly course but the route is quite scenic and varied taking you around Wachusett Reservoir. You are not completely in the country as you do cross into a few downtown sections, especially in the last mile or so. Most of the roads - in clear weather - have wide shoulders with plenty of room to run though a few sections get a bit narrow. While the uphill climbs can be long and tough they are mostly followed by a long downhill to recover. The only disappointment is the prevalence of junk food for the reception at the post race gathering (donuts and pie, really?). However, having hot showers available to runners after this race is a huge plus and greatly appreciated. This is not a big field (300-400 runners) but everybody there is serious about getting a good run in and having a good time. Also, I love the 11 a.m. start time! Weather this time of year can be brutal and having a later start usually ensures that race conditions will be a bit more comfortable as was the case this year with temperatures around 36-39 with some sun and no wind. This was my first year running it and I'll be back.
