Take on an unforgettable trail running adventure in the heart of the Swiss Alps at the Engelberg Trail Festival, part of the RunThrough Trails Global Series.
Located around 25km south of Lucerne, Engelberg is surrounded by rolling green pastures, dramatic mountain peaks and more than 500km of spectacular trails. With its cobbled streets, traditional Swiss hotels and historic 900-year-old Benedictine monastery, the town provides a truly memorable setting for a day of alpine running.
Choose from a range of challenging distances designed to combine runnable trails with rewarding climbs and breathtaking scenery.
The 100K route takes runners on an incredible journey through the mountains, climbing towards Jochpass and Melchsee while passing beautiful alpine lakes before descending into the valley and joining the 50K route towards Wolfenschiessen. From there, the trail climbs once again towards the spectacular surroundings of Brunni before meeting the 25K route in the Fürenalp Valley.
Expect sweeping alpine views, dramatic peaks, technical sections and plenty of rewarding miles along the way. Whether you are stepping up to a new trail distance or taking on a major mountain challenge, Engelberg offers an unforgettable opportunity to experience the Swiss Alps on foot.

Route information

Located 25km South of Lucerne, the picturesque town of Engelberg almost doesn’t seem real.
The cobbled streets, beautiful swiss hotels and 900 year old Benedictine Monastery are surrounded by rolling green pastures, out of which rise the titanic glaciated mountain peaks. This valley is truly magical and with 500km of trails to choose from you will not be disappointed. We have combined runnable trails with big elevation to create a range of challenges to suit everyone’s running aspirations.
The 100K route takes runners on a truly unforgettable journey. The race climbs to the heights of Jochpass and Melchesee, passing stunning hanging lakes before descending into the valley to meet the 50K course towards Wolfenschiessen.
From there, the trail rises again to the breathtaking setting of Brunni, before joining the 25K runners in the Fürenalp Valley. Surrounded by dramatic peaks and sweeping alpine views, this course delivers challenge and beauty in equal measure.
Far more than a “hidden gem,” these routes are a chance to experience the very best of the Swiss Alps on foot.

How to get there

Get full directions
By Train:
National and international connections (from Zurich airport connections every half hour with approx. 1h travel time) to Lucerne.
Then with the Zentralbahn in 45 minutes through varied landscape and gorges up to Engelberg. Also the combination with the ship has its charm: from Lucerne by sea to Beckenried and from there by public bus and train to Engelberg. The timetable of the public transportation provides all connections and you can buy your ticket directly online.
By Airplane:
National and international connections to Zurich, Basel and Geneva. From Zurich airport, train connections every half hour with approx. 1 hour travel time to Lucerne railroad station.
Then with the Zentralbahn in 45 minutes through varied landscape and gorges up to Engelberg. The combination with the ship also has its charm: from Lucerne by boat to Stansstad or Buochs and from there by public bus and train to Engelberg.
By car:
Motorway A2 (Basel - Gotthard), take exit Stans-Süd and follow the all-year open main road 20 km to Engelberg. Engelberg is located 30 minutes from Lucerne, 1 hour and 15 minutes from Zurich and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Basel.
