About

BY-ATHENA is back.
After an incredible summer race weekend, we’re heading back to Peckham - Copeland Park for our next event. We have eight of your favourite functional fitness challenges back-to-back and split timed with NO RUNNING!!!
Welcome to THE URBAN ENGINE
Built to be fast, intense and full of energy, THE URBAN ENGINE blends functional fitness, live music and spectator support into one seriously fun race experience.
For this event we are moving away from our signature THE_URBAN_RACE half-distance format. This will be back for summer 2027.
You’ll take on 8 rounds of functional fitness stations designed to test your engine, strength, grit and mindset.
Expect a fast, high-energy race experience with live atmosphere, music, spectators, race timing, finish-line moments and the full By-Athena community behind you!
Whether you’re racing for a podium, chasing a PB, stepping up from running, or entering your first hybrid fitness event, this is your next challenge.
Who it’s for
THE URBAN ENGINE is built for:
Seasoned hybrid athletes chasing speed and competition.
Runners looking for something more explosive than a standard race.
Gym-goers ready to test their training in a live event environment.
First-timers who want a challenge that feels big, motivating and achievable.
You don’t need to be elite to enter. You just need to be ready to push yourself.
Why race?
A shorter, sharper hybrid format.
An Urban warehouse location.
Our By-Athena electric race day atmosphere.
A supportive community.
Music, spectators and finish-line energy.
A challenge that is accessible, competitive and unforgettable.
Ready to send it? See you on the start line.

FAQs

Which engine should I pick?
50cc: solo, half distance. Single Engine: solo, full distance. Twin Turbo: doubles (Women's, Men's or Mixed). Three Litre: trios (Women's, Men's or Mixed). Booking for a big group? You can also buy a Full Wave ticket, which takes all 10 lanes of one wave.
How do Doubles and Trios work?
Your team does every station together. One athlete works at a time and you can swap whenever you like (Sled Push swaps happen at the lane ends only). Resting team-mates walk behind the working athlete on the Burpee Jumps and Weighted Lunges. Mixed teams race at the men's weights.
What weights will I use?
Women's / men's: Sled Push 102 / 152 kg (incl. sled), Weighted Lunges 10 / 20 kg, Wall Balls 4 kg to 2.7m / 6 kg to 3.0m. 50cc athletes use the same weights. Full standards are on by-athena.com/theurbanengine
Can I transfer my place or change engine or division?
Yes. You can transfer your place to a friend or switch engine or division yourself in 'Manage Booking' on Let's Do This, up to 7 days before the event, subject to availability. After that, entries are final.
Is there an age limit?
Yes. Anyone aged 17 or older on race day can take part. No qualification is needed: if you train, you belong here.
Do I need to accept a waiver?
Yes. Every athlete must accept the race waiver, including team-mates whose place was booked by someone else. You can accept it when booking, in 'Manage Booking' on Let's Do This, or in the By-Athena app. If you haven't, you'll do it at registration before you collect your timing chip.
What time should I arrive?
60 mins before your wave. Doors open at 08:00. Division windows: Women's Doubles 09:00–11:00, Mixed Doubles 11:00–13:00, Men's Doubles 13:00–14:00, Women's Singles and Women's 50cc 14:00–15:00, Men's Singles and Men's 50cc 15:00–16:00, Trios 16:00–19:00. Your exact wave time is emailed 1 week before race day.
Is there a bag drop?
Yes, a secure bag drop for athletes: one bag each, roughly cabin-sized. Unfortunately, due to space restrictions spectator bags can't be stored there.
Can friends and family come to watch?
Yes. Spectators are welcome and free, with viewing right around the stations.
Can I get a refund?
Entries are non-refundable unless you added Refund Protection (Let's Do This's Refundable Registration, provided by Protect Group) at checkout. It covers your own circumstances, such as illness, injury or travel disruption, and claims go directly to Protect Group with your booking reference and supporting evidence; their full terms apply. It can only be added at checkout, not afterwards. Without it, you can still pass your place to a friend up to 7 days before the event (see above). Full details are in our Event Terms.
Can adaptive and para athletes take part?
Yes. We're an inclusive community and we adapt the race to suit the athlete. Email info@by-athena.com before race day and we'll work out the right set-up with you.
Is there a time limit?
No. There's no official time limit, so take it at your own pace. Most athletes finish in around 45 to 75 minutes, depending on ability. That's an average, not a cut-off. Athletes start in staggered waves within their division's window, so your speed never affects anyone else. If you feel unwell at any point, stop and tell the nearest marshal: trained first aiders and medical staff are on site.
Can I wear headphones?
No. For safety you need to hear marshals, announcements and other racers. The DJs have the soundtrack covered.
Can I carry water or gels?
Yes, as long as you start the race with them (a handheld bottle, belt or vest). Hydration stations with water and electrolytes are inside the venue.
What's my expected finish time used for?
We use it to build fair, competitive waves and manage racer flows through the day. Be honest rather than hopeful! It only affects your wave, not your result.
How is the race timed?
Every athlete wears an ankle timing chip that records every station. Follow live results in the By-Athena app, with official results published within 48 hours. Please return your chip at the finish: unreturned chips are charged at £35.
Are there prizes?
Yes. The top 3 in every division win a BY ATHENA race flag and T-shirt.
Are there changing rooms?
No. There are no changing rooms at this event, but toilets are available. Come dressed to race and bring a warm layer for afterwards.
Do I need hybrid racing experience?
No. There's no running, and 50cc is half of every station, so it's a great first race. Experienced athletes can chase a fast time.
