Duncombe Park Running Festival- Helmsley

With the old English name of Elmeslac, Helmsley predates the Domesday Book. It was first settled in around 3,000 BC and small farming communities lived in the town throughout the Neolithic period, Bronze and Iron Ages and into Roman times. The lands around Helmsley were held by William the Conquerors brother. You can still visit the ruins of the Norman castle, and see ancient oak trees in Duncombe Park dating from this time.

The oldest surviving house in Helmsley is the medieval Canons Garth, the vicarage. The Norman castle, dating back over 900 years, evolved over the centuries, from a mighty medieval fortress to a luxurious Tudor mansion, to a Civil War stronghold and a romantic Victorian ruin. It is open all year round for visitors to enjoy, under the care of English Heritage. The Walled Gardens also enjoy a historic past, tracing their roots back to 1759.

Crazy race. Boiling hot, big hills, evil stairs, beautiful setting, great crowd, beer, cake, medal.Love it.This event can only get bigger.

Well organised run on a very scenic and hilly route. Great, friendly marshalls and plenty of drink stations. Will definitely do it again.

It was a hot two laps for the half marathon, but the scenery was stunning, the marshalls out on the course were all friendly, and the signage made navigation easy. Some tough hills, a lovely set of steps, and some rough terrain in parts. It's not often you do a run and feel like the organisers and marshalls are genuinely bothered about the runners. With Its Grim Up North that's what you get. Well stocked aid stations, a friendly smile, lovely medal, beautiful locations, and cake plus goodie bag at the end. And once you've done a couple of runs, they remember you!Yes it was tough today, but a few degrees cooler and this would have been up there for run of the year. I'll be back!

  • Did the 8.8 Miles in 2018

Great organisation and friendly atmosphere as usual from Grim Up North Running! I'm not convinced the course deserved the 5 boot 'grimmer than grim' rating as its a fairly straightforward race - largely flat & easy running on road & canal surfaces. the couple of more trail-y sections by the river and across fields also present no major challenges.Lovely setting at the Abbey start/finish. Lots of cake & a cool medal too!

Great race with mixed terrain. Lucky we had not had lots of rain this year so pretty dry.

A Great challenging race, canal part a bit boring but allows to gain some time back. Im always scared of tripping/falling so for me would only race this event in trail shoes. Plenty of water and jelly babies on the 8.8 route.

  • Did the Half Marathon- Saturday in 2018

I thought the information provided was helpful. I wore trail shoes and am pleased I did - the rain and mud made parts of it a bit slippery and uneven. Check the weather before you run!
  • Did the Half Marathon- Saturday in 2018

I think everyone clocked it longer than 13.1 so don't worry too much about that PB. Although it is flat so if conditions are favourable
  • Did the Half Marathon- Saturday in 2018

Lovely, flat route, brilliant unique medal! Really friendly race that wasn't too competitive, everyone who took part was really supportive.
