Castle Howard Triathlon

The rapturous reception afforded to previous Castle Howard Triathlons subsequently led to the expansion of a 2-day weekend extravaganza.

In its 10th year, the Castle Howard Triathlon will be the 4th weekend event of the 2019 Castle Tri Series and will once again feature the obligatory picture postcard backdrop and a course with something for every level of triathlete. The 13,000 acre grounds of Castle Howard form arguably the most physically demanding triathlon course of the Castle Tri Series.

Race entrants will start the race by swimming through Castle Howards Great Lake before transitioning into the technical bike route through the glorious rural idyll of Yorkshire and the Howardian Hills. The spectacular run leg passes through the undulating countryside of the estate before a sprint finish tops everything off in style right in front of the main doors of the house. Theres never been a better time to visit Gods Own County and Castle Howard.

The construction of Castle Howard took more than 100 years before being finally completed in the 18th Century, and spanned the lifetime of three earls and numerous architects, although Sir John Vanbrugh is credited with the original design. The Great Lake is the setting for the swim section of the triathlon.

Set in the Howardian Hills, the bike legs initially take in the 18th Century Avenue, a main road that runs in a straight line from south to north for five miles. The run will pass The Temple of the Four Winds and one of the finest, free-standing mausoleums in Europe. A hop over New River Bridge, a circumnavigation of South Lake and the Atlas Fountain will take racers to the finishing straight in front of Castle Howard itself.

Castle Howard has been a regular backdrop for films and television, with both ITVs lauded Brideshead Revisited in the early 1980s and the acclaimed 2008 feature film production shot on location here, hence the name of our adult races.

Hathersage Hilly Triathlon

The village of Hathersage lies in the heart of the beautiful Peak District National Park, and is easily reached from Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham. Its an interesting and historic village with links to Robin Hood and the Eyre family; its also a popular centre for walkers and rock-climbers. The 420 metre swim takes place in a heated, open-air pool with wide lanes making it enjoyable for swimmers of all abilities. Theres also plenty of room poolside for your supporters. After the swim its on to the 20K bike and, with a name like the Hathersage Hilly, you know it wont be flat! However, the hills are not so long or steep, and youll be rewarded with some stunning views of the Derbyshire countryside. The 7km run is almost entirely through woodland and open countryside with off road running shoes being an option if its wet. Again, the run has a few hills but dont worry too much its a long, fast downhill to the finish line! With your race over, there is a caf at the swimming pool for hot drinks and snacks, and Hathersage village has plenty of tea shops, pubs, and outdoor pursuit shops to keep you busy.
