Deep within Ireland’s ancient folklore lives the legend of the Gancanagh, a mysterious fairy renowned for his irresistible charm and the powerful enchantment he could cast over those who encountered him.
Unlike the fearsome Oilliphéist of Day 8, the Gancanagh doesn’t need brute strength to capture his victims.
His weapon is temptation!
And on Saturday 15th May 2027, we’re bringing this captivating legend to life with the Mount to Coast Gancanagh, Day 9 of our extraordinary 14-day MizMal® adventure.

At 52 miles, the MTC Gancanagh is another serious test of endurance, determination and mental resilience.
For competitors undertaking the complete MizMal® challenge, eight consecutive days of ultra running are already behind them.
Tired legs, aching muscles and accumulated fatigue will be constant companions. But the adventure continues, and another extraordinary Irish landscape awaits.
For standalone competitors, the Gancanagh offers the opportunity to experience a challenging 52-mile ultramarathon, complete with the support, camaraderie and atmosphere of MizMal®.

52 MILES OF ENCHANTMENT, ENDURANCE AND IRISH ADVENTURE!
Saturday 15th May 2027 | Day 9 of Mount to Coast MizMal®
Welcome to the Mount to Coast Gancanagh, a challenging 52-mile ultramarathon inspired by one of Ireland's most captivating mythical creatures.
The Gancanagh was a mysterious fairy whose irresistible charm could leave those who encountered him hopelessly enchanted.
But on Day 9 of MizMal®, there's only one attraction that matters.
The finish line!
🏃 THE CHALLENGE
Starting at the Woodfield Hotel in Clifden, Co. Galway, competitors will make their way north towards the Westport Woods Hotel & Spa in Westport, Co. Mayo.
This 52-mile journey takes us further along Ireland's spectacular western coastline, through a landscape renowned for its rugged beauty and dramatic scenery.
For our full MizMal® competitors, this is the ninth consecutive day of ultra running.
Eight demanding days are already behind them, and accumulated fatigue will make every mile count.
For standalone competitors, the Gancanagh presents a formidable single-day challenge and the opportunity to become part of our extraordinary MizMal® adventure.
💚 WHAT TO EXPECT
52 miles of challenging Irish ultramarathon running.
A journey from Clifden to Westport, continuing our northbound adventure.
Supported checkpoints providing food, refreshments and encouragement.
GPS navigation information supplied before the event.
GPS tracking to assist with competitor safety and event monitoring.
A bespoke MTC Gancanagh finisher's medal for successful finishers.
A friendly, supportive atmosphere shared with fellow ultrarunners.
⏱️ MINIMUM PACE REQUIREMENT
Competitors must maintain a minimum average pace of 4 mph, including time spent at checkpoints.
This requirement is essential to the safe and efficient operation of the event.
Checkpoint and finish cut-off times will be published in the dedicated Cut-Off Times section.

For competitors tackling the complete 14-day MizMal® challenge, reaching Westport means another precious day completed on the journey from Mizen Head to Malin Head.

For standalone runners, completing the MTC Gancanagh means conquering 52 miles of Irish countryside and earning a very special medal inspired by an ancient legend.

The race is point to point and it is the competitors responsibility to make their own travel arrangements in getting to the start and leaving at the finish.
Entry Fees:
MTC Gancanagh – £90.00
MTC Gancanagh Plus Race Package - £155.00 (this includes an embroidered MTC Gancanagh race shirt and lightweight hi-viz race jacket). In order to guarantee clothing supply, this entry option needs to be completed at least four weeks before the event.
All deposits and payments are on a non refundable basis.
