New to Triathlon? Let’s Break Down the Lingo!
Triathlon is one of the most rewarding sports in the world, but the jargon can feel overwhelming if it's your first time. Here is a handy guide to the industry terms used across race day:
1. The Disciplines & Order
Triathlon always follows the same order: Swim → Bike → Run.
Sprint Distance: One of the most popular race formats, consisting of a short 400m swim, a 20km cycle, and a 5km run. Perfect for beginners and experienced speedsters alike!
2. Transition (T1 & T2)
Transition is the secure central hub where you keep your bike and gear. It acts as the "fourth discipline" of triathlon:
T1 (Transition 1): Moving from the Swim to the Bike. This is where you dry off, put on your helmet, grab your bike, and head out.
T2 (Transition 2): Moving from the Bike to the Run. You rack your bike, switch from cycling shoes or trainers into running gear, and hit the run course.
3. Swim Seeding & Waves
Rather than hundreds of people jumping into the pool at once, participants are split into small groups called Waves.
You will submit an estimated 400m Swim Time when you sign up. We use this to "seed" you alongside swimmers of a similar pace, ensuring you swim comfortably without being crowded or pushed.
4. Closed Road Circuit
This means the cycling portion of the race takes place on roads that are completely closed to public car traffic. It provides a safe, stress-free environment where you can focus entirely on your ride.
5. Multi-Lap Course
The 20km bike leg consists of 4 laps of a 5km loop. A multi-lap design makes the race spectator-friendly, meaning your friends and family get to cheer you on multiple times throughout the event!
6. Chip Timing
You will be given a small ankle strap containing an electronic microchip. Every time you cross a timing mat (at the start, transition entry/exit, and finish line), your precise splits are recorded automatically so you can see exact times for every leg of your race.
7. BT Race Pass / Day License
Under British Triathlon (BT) regulations, all competitors must have valid insurance while racing. If you aren't an annual member of British Triathlon, a small Day License (Race Pass) is added during registration to ensure you are fully covered on race day.
