Join us for The Great West Walk, a unique guided walking challenge around Exeter's beautiful Green Circle route. Starting and finishing at St James Park, this inclusive community event brings people together to explore the city, enjoy the outdoors, and support wellbeing across Exeter.
Whether you're an experienced walker or simply looking for a new challenge, The Great West Walk is designed to be accessible, supportive and enjoyable for all abilities.
Guided Walking Groups
To ensure everyone enjoys the day at a pace that suits them, participants will be placed into guided walking groups led by trained staff and volunteers.
Our "pacer" groups will cater for a range of walking speeds, with group leaders supporting participants throughout the route. Groups will stop for approximately 15 minutes at each checkpoint, creating a relaxed and sociable atmosphere across the day.
Where sections of the route may present accessibility challenges, alternative routes and suitable detours will be available, ensuring as many people as possible can take part.

The Great West Walk is proudly supported by a growing network of local organisations and community partners committed to improving health, wellbeing and access to nature across Exeter.

Route information

Participants will follow sections of Exeter's renowned Green Circle, a circular route that showcases the city's green spaces, communities and hidden gems.
Along the way, walkers will visit four staffed checkpoints:
Checkpoint 1: University Gardens
Checkpoint 2: Wonford
Checkpoint 3: Alphington
Checkpoint 4: Exwick
Each checkpoint will provide a welcome opportunity to rest, refuel and connect with fellow participants before continuing the journey.

Event day logistics

Registration
Registration will be open from 8:00am at St James Park, Exeter. Please arrive in plenty of time to check in, meet your walking group and receive your event briefing before the walk starts at 9:00am.
Start Time
The Great West Walk will begin at 9:00am sharp. Participants will be organised into guided walking groups based on pace, with experienced walk leaders supporting each group throughout the day.
Checkpoints
There will be four checkpoints located around the route:
University Gardens
Wonford
Alphington
Exwick
Each checkpoint will provide hot drinks, snacks and toilet facilities where available. Groups will have approximately 15 minutes at each checkpoint before continuing their journey.
Accessibility
The Great West Walk is designed to be as inclusive as possible. Where sections of the Green Circle present accessibility challenges, guided groups will be directed along suitable alternative routes. If you have any accessibility requirements, please contact the event team before race day.
Finish
The walk will finish back at St James Park, with the final groups expected to return by approximately 4:00pm. Participants will be welcomed back with refreshments and the opportunity to celebrate their achievement with fellow walkers.
Safety
The route will be supported by event staff and volunteers throughout the day. All participants must follow the instructions of walk leaders and event marshals to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
