  • Did the Tough Guy in 2019

Entering this event feels like joining a cult, there's a very special atmosphere and everything runs very smoothly despite appearing to be slightly ramshackle and ad-hoc. The fact that people travel from all over the world to take on this event is testament to its legendary status. This is a brutal challenge, the initial 8-mile-ish run is just a warmup for "The Killing Fields" where for about 2 miles the obstacles are so densely packed that in many cases you step off one obstacle directly onto the next. Some of the obstacles are pretty terrifying just to look at, gigantic, ancient wooden structures with layers of netting and ropes. These are not the sort of thing that gets brought in by truck and set up the week before the race. The biggest challenge is staying warm during multiple dips in freezing water and high-level obstacles (the wind was gusting up to 50 mph at times). I have never felt so cold but I'm happy that I made it to the end after only one check up with the course marshals to make sure I wasn't hypothermic. At the finish, I swore that once was enough for this event - then a few weeks later I signed up to do it again next year!

4.5 miles of cross-country followed by 4 miles of freezing water and old and battered obstacles. People new to the event had no idea where to go, what to do or when to start. The course was easy to follow with tape to guide you every step of the way. Worth doing for the experience but I dont get what you pay 100 for.

Was a crazy day , freezing cold in January doing a 8ish Mile obstacle race. Is well set up as it is a permanent all year round. The staff are very friendly. If your thinking of doing this in January beware there is a lot of water to cross and your swimming parts it is freezing its not for the faint hearted. Enjoy.

If you want fancy obstacles, fancy t-shirts etc don't do this, if, like me you want a rugged, rough and bloody tough race that will beat you up mentally and physically and that epitomises what an obstacle race should be (in my opinion) then do it, at least once! I've done loads of them and will do so as long as they are on, Tough Guy is fantastic. P.S there is no medal better earned than a TG horse brass, go earn one.

This was my first tough guy but I'm a seasoned obstacle racer. Definitely a unique experience, sure it was tough and bloody cold which was probably the real hard obstacle. The one consideration is that obstacles structure aren't as safe as other event, for example I seen a guy falling on obstacle and breaking it.Anyway I'm happy I've done it and I'd recommend to anyone that really want to test it's limits.
