It was my first ever race. Loved it! Only thing Id recommend is a healthier food range in the grandstands. It seemed the only food you could buy wasnt exactly sticking with the healthy running theme.

Run Heaton was an undulating, multi-lap race which had 5k, 10k and Half Marathon options.
Parking, baggage and number collection were all effortless.
Half marathon distance consisted of a partial loop, followed by 3 full laps. Heaton Park is a beautiful setting for a race. Paths were good for running on, although the 2x significant hills on each lap, make it a nice challenge.
Water station was on each lap, so approximately every 3miles.
Marshals were absolutely brilliant, as were the small but enthusiastic support.
Finishers received a decent medal, flap jack, banana ect.
There was also a FREE post-race massage option and FREE photographs.
    In summary-
Well organised, well marshalled, friendly race and good value.
Free massage & photos was an unexpected bonus.
The course is quite challenging but not too bad.
I'd certainly do this race again.

  • Did the event in 2018

Unique Setting for race. Did the 10k which was 2 laps round the racecouse.Distance markings well set out and good support from the marshals. Could be a good pb course but on the day had bad weather so not to beRecommended race and will do again next year
  • Did the event in 2018

You dont get many chance's to run at such an iconic sporting venue such as Aintree Racecourse, so I booked onto the race as soon as I saw it advertised. Registration process was straight forward. Information sent out could've been better, as mentioned with the change of time for the 10k start. Information on parking wasnt the clearest either. Limited parking at the venue but then advised plenty of parking near by, without giving alternatives. On the day, collecting the race number was nice and easy, along with the bag drop off area. The course was flat in the majority of areas, apart from just after the start but that was only a short hill. One downside was the amount of toilets, just 15 portaloo's between 2000 runners & spectators wasnt enough, leading to very long queues. Maybe next year could the actual venue toilets be opened up?During the race, support from the marshalls was brilliant. They did brilliant to keep their own spirits up despite the awful weather. The course was mainly tarmac path & road. Only other slight issue was the distance signage. There had been no mention to which signs were for which race, which lead to confusion during the first lap of the 10k as to how far we'd completed. Maybe a different colour sign for each distance? Each problem wasnt a big negative factor. An enjoyable day was had & I'll be looking to do the race again next year and would recommend to others.

Really enjoyable half marathon scenary was great plenty to observe while running which passers the time no pb for me but was one of my favourites races, car park was right next to start well Marshalled water stations plenty spectators were on hand to give you a clap all in all would recommend even if I did get told it was a boring race and would do it again.
  • Did the event in 2018

Easy registration process.Parking plentyful near to the course start. The race was slightly delayed by about 10-15mins, being in one of the pens near the back I couldnt really make out the announcements clearly as to why. Both 10K and HM start at the same time.Enoyed the course which was a nice mix of park, urban and sea front. This is a really flat route and certainly one for PBs but the conditions were brutal in the heat with very little shade to be found and despite the run in along the sea front there was not much of a breeze to help in cooling you down. My only gripe with the course is a very narrow exit from the park at the start which causes a bit of a bottleneck but once you are out the route opens up with no congestion after that.  The Marshall and Race Angel support was fantastic in keeping everyone safe.Three water stations were available on the half route with bottles having sports lids which is always a plus for me. No gels but I always carry my own anyway.Nice medal and TShirt at the end along with a bottle of water and a goody bag containing a High5 products... Recovery Bar, EnergyGel, IsoGel and Eloctrolyte Sports drink tablets.Would definetly run this one again.
  • Did the event in 2017

A very large but well organised race. With so many people, it does get a bit tricky getting around the first mile or so through Victoria park. When you leave the park it does open out a bit and bodes well for PBs and fast times. It heads out towards the marine lake and then heads back to the start/finish area along Marine DriveA good 10k race and one I'd ceratinly look at doing again.

  • Did the event in 2018

This is my 6th running of the Manchester run, in what is always one of my favourite events as it’s where it all started for me back in 2012.As usual registration and organisation was really simple as is the organisation of the day getting to the start and the collection of goody bag at the is a well oiled machine. The pacers do a great job motivating (I am one lol) and it’s great to try to spot celebs. This time though it just didn’t feel the same. The atmosphere was good but not quite the levels of the past. This was the first time I have experienced a fla spot between runners around the 7-8k mark, maybe it was the heat or just the fact there were less runners? Can t fault all the local turning out to support as usual they were great, but again feel it just wasn’t as highly supported as you got past old trafford. The finish line was amazing as usual.I feel that the 10k race is being affected by the HM taking its place in the morning, making it a long day for the locals to support with some 10k not even starting before the Tv coverage ends, some people running for charity not getting the opportunity to spot themselves on TV. Great run operate separate events for 10k and HM in Newcastle, why not do this in Manchester.Medals are a bit more imaginative lately with ok shirts, but apart from a chocolate or two, a breakfast bar and a drink, not much to shout about in the goody bags, put to shame the Southport Mad Dog bags.Weather was red hot this year, really needed a few more water stations, I’ve never seen so many people walking. I will be back again but not quite the event it was before the HM was introduced.Check out my video of the dayhttps://youtu.be/AdgxtsNS80g
  • Did the event in 2018

I was lucky enough to receive a place on behalf of my local charity, the registration process was very simple. The pre race pack arrived in plenty of time and was very informative. The race was in 2 waves, 9am and 9:10am. Warmups were held for each wave. The weather was extremely hot and water stations were at the 5, 10, 15 and 20KM marks - bottles of water were handed out with no queues. The course is very uninspiring and it mentions in the pre race pack headphones wouldn't be required as there was plenty of entertainment along the course, if I were to run it again I would make sure I had music.A number of people required medical attention due to the heat, this was provided very quickly - thankfully. The course finished on Deansgate, thankfully my 9 year old son ran the last half a mile to get me over the line as by that point I was fit for nothing. The goody bags contained the medal, t shirt, flavoured juice, cereal bar and a few other items. Great medal, would I run it again - probably not

A good half marathon. Flat. Decent medal. Easy parking. Lots of water stations. Could do with more loos & some fuel.
  • Did the event in 2018

I attended the Windmill Half on a bit of a whim and although it was a 3 hour drive away, it was good fun.Very well organised, there’s ample parking and the race pack collection was easy and straightforward. The start was good, there were two announcers on the PA system who kept everyone in good spirits and are a credit to the race. The course itself is really flat, however it is repetitive as effectively there are 2 x 2 loops. Myself and other runners near me really struggled with working out the mileage, at some point our garmin’s were nearly a whole mile out, and my mile 5 and 6 were basically signposted 4 and 5. however the signposts 7 to 8 could’ve have been more than half a mile apart so it eventually evened itself out by mile 9ish.  The finish area was really busy, I was pacing a friend at came in at around the 2 hour mark, however by this point a lot of finishers and spectators were crossing over the route. This would have annoyed me if I was going for a PB. The finishers medal is big and blingy, you receive this along with a freddo and a bottle of water. PROSFlatFast (on a cooler day)FriendlyParkingSupport and marshalls Price CONSRepetitiveLack of toilets (portaloos arrive at 9:30)Mileage signs incorrect Busy finish area
  • Did the event in 2018

My 2nd time doing Windmill Half after taking part last year. Resistration was straight forward with numbers collected from Fylde Coast Runners HQ or on raceday itself. Nice atmosphere pre race.A man & woman on the P.A kept runners & spectators entertained. The race itself is fast & flat on a normal day however the high tempratures made conditions difficult. It’s basically 2x small loops & 2x large loops.Mentally it’s quite challenging because you run many of the paths/roads 3 or 4 times. Seeing Mile #7 marker when you’re on mile 2 is slightly off putting but this is only a minor gripe.Support from spectators was very good, some had hose pipes & wet sponges to cool down runner which was very kind. Marshals were generous in their encouragement.Runners were rewarded with a beautiful, chunky meda, water & a small chocolate bar. Maybe an extra food item for finishers, something savoury might be a good idea?IN SUMMARY...HIGHS: Fast, flat & scenic course.LOWS: The loops aren’t to every bodies liking, especially when you see mile markers that clearly aren’t correct.BOTTOM LINE: This race will suit PB chasers. The medal is beautiful.

  • Did the event in 2018

The organisation and undertaking of this event seemed really good, although the course length was disappointingly short. My GPS only recorded 5.44 miles, and even allowing for signal issues this is incredibly short of the 10k mark (6.2miles). Having checked on Strava, other people who ran only clocked up to 5.7 miles. Rookie error I wouldn't expect from a company that puts on so many events.
  • Did the event in 2018

Very disappointed to find at the finish that the Half Marathon course was 1.9km short! Reading some 10k reviews it seems that the suppossed 7km lap was 600+ metres shortRegistration and race number collection was very slick with a very detailed and clear pre race briefingOnly a small field (77 runners?) so a smooth start ensued, the course was a mix of dusty uneven track, tarmac paths, concreted road and a testing woodland section with a short steep hill, altogether about 600ft of climb over the 3 lapsThe 3rd lap was livened up as runners from 4 events all mingled together ( 2 x Triathlons, the 10k and Half)The scenery was gorgeous and variedWell stocked and well run feed stations with cups of water, Hi5 and flat coke together with jelly beans and gelsWell marshalled although it got a bit frantic not long after i finished near the final stretch as runners from the 4 events converged all with a varying number of laps to complete, an extra and more decisive marshall would have helped Plenty of food available post run with a good mix of cakes, fruit and drinks. Lots of concession stalls in the post race arenaAt least i set a PB for my first (and hopefully only!) 19.2km HALF :-)However, for a £40 entry fee it would have been nice to have got a finishers t-shirt and a better quality medal.......and a correctly measured course
  • Did the event in 2018

I've done the Castle Triathlon Series before. In 2017, I did the swim as part of a triathlon relay team. I knew that the parking was easy and right next to the event village which means a relaxed start. Plenty of portaloos and changing tents too.We picked up our numbers from the registration tent. This was nice and easy and there were no queues. We later learned that there was about 77 people in the race so I am not sure how it would be if the numbers were greater. We had a full race briefing from the Race Direcetor which was great and unnusual for races these days although it is standard in triathlons. He explained it was three 7km laps of the grounds, pointing out the various landmarks and feed and water stations on the course. As it was warming up, these were much needed and well stocked. I stopped at every one to either take on water or throw it over me to keep cool. It was great to have coca cola and jelly babies for fuel. High 5 gels were also on offer. The marshals were all fantastic (and probably sunburnt!) and the quality of the food at the finish was great: there were melons, oranges and bananas, along with cakes of various descriptions and plenty of water. All in paper cups, doing their bit for the environment. The course was very picturesque, taking in the castle's chapel, running along a treelined avenue and back, across the fields to the stables and then up the hill behind the castle. The hill was steep but the run down was good fun! The major problem with this race was that it was too short...by 2km! My Garmin registered 19.19km. Most people can forgive a few hundred metres, but this was a major error. I hope the organisers address the issues and provide an explanation as to what went wrong with the course measuring. The medal felt a little flimsy and not as substantial as last year's medal at all. There was no finisher's T shirt supplied as part of the package and the one available to buy cost £25. I was invited to do the race as a race ambassador (hence I have left value of money blank in the ratings above) but, had I paid to do this race, I would be very disappointed with the short course. I think the organisers are missing a trick not providing a T shirt as part of the package as they serve as good advertising by those who wear them. I saw that spectators were charged £7.50 to enter the grounds which also seems a bit steep. If the course distance issues could be addressed and the cost either reduced or more provided for your money, this could easily be a 5 star race, as it had a great family friendly, almost festival like, vibe and the course was stunning.

    Organiser replied:
Thanks Ann, great to hear you had a good event by in large! Some constructive points that we will address in our event debrief. Key point being the event distance. What I would say about the spectator entrance is that there is lots of offer; on a normal day £7.50 is charged to go to those castle gardens and we offer live music, free entertainment for kids etc. Maybe we need to communicate that offering more. Thoughts very welcomed and congratulations on your race! :)

First time I have run this race, overall it was an enjoyable race, it was well organised and well marshalled, there were marshals placed wherever there could be a concern over which way to run and they were on the road with stop/go sign for the cars to let us carry on running without stopping us.It may be just me with this little gripe, but it is the first event I have run where the timing chip is laced into your running shoes, I kept thinking it was going to come apart as I kept catching it with my other foot. It may be just my running style. The course is a mixture of road and path/trail running and as others have mentioned previously there are places where it isn't easy to overtake / get out of someone's way. The course starts at Stockport County football ground and finishes not far from where you start taking you along the very scenic river Mersey, but before you finish you have to go up the dreaded hill, just what you want at the end of nearly 13 miles.Once finished you get your medal, flapjack, water and an energy drink, overall a well run event.
  • Did the event in 2017

I was late to register for the Hatters Half Marathon. I was feeling a little under motivated so signed up to the race with the intention to just make sure that i can complete the distance before Manchester Half in October.Signing up was very simple through the run Britain website and at £20 for an unattached entry i was always going to get good value as long as i finished. It was always going to be a good race for me to enter. Stockport isn't too far from where i live and the course that takes in part of the Transpennine Trail is one that i have ran quite a few times on training runs. So i knew the area and knew the terrain. The race would start at Edgeley Park, the football ground of Stockport County which is very easy to find. There was also the bonus that the race organisers got permission to use a car park that was a very short walk from the starting line. It was £2 to park and it made all the difference on the day as the car park would of adequately provided parking for all the runners which were just over 300 in total. On arrival at the starting area there was free massage if you wanted it and a concourse under one of the stands were being used as the registration area. Registration was on the day between 8 and 9am, names were split into 4 sections in alphabetical order. It was quick and simple, just what you need. There was also plenty of toilets to use in the stand so there wasn't the usual queues that are a regular cause of anxiety before races. Everything was relaxed and ran smoothly. The race began at 9.30am. There was a quick race briefing by a man with a mega-phone but as i always hang around at the back i couldn't really hear it. Once the race started the course was simple enough. Down the hill from Edgeley onto the Transpennine Trail and then it looped back to finish. The course was simple but at time very narrow, offering no room to pass but as i was really using the race as a test of my fitness i wasn't too concerned with going past people. This part of the Transpennine Trail from Stockport to Northenden is solid ground. Road shoes are more than adequate for the terrain unless there has been a really heavy downpour of rain. It is also nice and flat. The only hilly part of the race is the last Mile which is uphill and to be fair its a big hill but it was down the hill from the start so only fair you should go back up it.I was impressed with the water stations. There were 3 at 3, 6 and 9 Miles. You could have either a cup or take a full bottle. I was pleased with this because i had been ill the night before the race so wanted to mke sure i stayed hydrated. Some other Halfs i have done have only offered 1 water station and i don't think that is anywhere near enough for a Half Marathon.Everything considered the Hatters Half was enjoyable and this was mainly due to the organisers, because it was so well organised it meant that i wasn't as stressed before running as i sometimes get.My only gripe with the race was that there was supposed to be a total ban on headphones during the race because there was some road crossings involved (there was traffic management) and some people still ran with headphones in. Nowhere near as many as other races but i'm of the opinion that if you set a rule you should enforce it.I had a guy stop in front of me and we weren't even a mile in. He had headphones in and seemed to be texting someone on his phone. This was on a stretch around quarter of a mile and it was was difficult to pass him. He was oblivious that he was literally holding up every runner behind him and i had to give him a gentle nudge so that he moved. Even then he looked at me as if he had no idea what the problem was. 10 minutes later he came blasting past everyone on another narrow stretch of course with total disregard for eveyone else. Apart from that minor issue i enjoyed the race. Completed it in 1hr 56mins and my plan was to finish sub 2, so happy days. The medal was pretty decent too, I will run again next year. Well done to the organisers.
  • Did the event in 2016

This was the second running of the Hatters Half, which starts out at the Football ground in Stockport before heading through the estate roads down to the river. Much of the course is then spent running along the riverbank save for a quick loop of Northenden town centre before reversing the route. It's a relatively flat course with only a short section at the start and end where there is a hill (that section is uphill on the way back!)Couple of gotchas. 1) there are stretches of the riverbank which are difficult to overtake so if you think you're going to go quick, it's best to do your overtaking before you leave the road section. 2) despite Stockport being a hotbed of running (seriously, we have 5 parkruns and each village has at least a RunTogether group if not it's own affiliated club) the car drivers in the town mostly need banning from driving. Totally impatient and often unwilling to observe simple safety - it's something that marrs all the events occurring on Stockport's roads. There is one major road crossing which you go out on and return on and there was a concern for safety of the marshals due to the behaviour of some drivers. A shame that the minority behave like this. That safety aspect aside it's a run worth looking into if you're new to the 13.1 distance. The medal was fine and you also get a free ticket to see Stockport County play later in the month. Whether this is a benefit I guess depends on whether you like football!

This was my first HM. I had a huge sense of achievement but i cant say that i enjoyed the race much. Mainly because of the fact that it was so crowded. Aid stations were located at quite narrow sections of the course and were so busy. I didnt need to ise them but every time was barged out of the way or had someone dart in front of me or throw a water bottle on the floor foe me to trip over. Its also not in a very nice part of the city so not at all scenic. I wont be doing it again.
  • Did the event in 2018

This was the first half marathon I ran last October and in my home town so it's always going to be very special to me.
The race number and pack were received about a week before the race.
There were a large number of runners, as expected the queue for the loos were long.
You were not able to move to a different time zone unless you were dropping back, the start of the zones had marshals holding tape across so be mindful of your finish time when you enter.
I wanted to move to a faster zone as I had improved in the 12 months since entering but was unable to.
The race is great and the on route support was amazing even though the weather was awful. So many spectators providing drinks, ice lollies and sweets - just fantastic.
Water/gel station were plentiful, marshals did a fantastic job.
The finish line seems never ending but the amazing spectators will keep you going.
Race pictures were expensive so I didn't buy any, it's such a shame they aren't included in the cost. More and more of the smaller races include them for free.
The medal and t shirt were fab
    Would I run this race next year ? 100% - I loved it 😄😄😄

Fantastic event. So well organised from beginning to end. My first half marathon ... watch out for the hill coming back into the city centre for the finish.

Third time racing this event and it just keeps getting better. Course is slightly different to go through the town at the beginning and the end puts you in the middle of the tudor stuff. It's well organised and the medal is a chunky piece! Falls nicely in the calendar for decent weather but you can get a warm day on this course. Crowd support is great and there is tons of music, so ditch the headphones.
  • Did the event in 2018

First time at Chester and really enjoyed it. Worried about getting into Chester in the morning due to the closed roads but there was no need. Very well signposted and helpful marshalls made getting to the racecourse and finding a parking space relatively easy.Very scenic route and fantastic support throughout. Mixture of wide and narrow lanes but all on closed roads. Some of the narrow lanes were quite congested at times but this is being picky. Not an easy course - much more hilly than expected but still managed my first sub two hour half! Prefered it to a flat course if I’m honest, the hills made it interesting. Feed stations were well stocked and manned.Looking forward to returning next year - booked it straight after finishing this years race!

Loved the race. All the family took part includes a 5k, 10k, half and full marathon. 10k was very hot and tricky running back down the promonade. Great atmosphere and a good event for all of the family.
  • Did the event in 2018

This was my third time of running this half marathon, and once again no complaints. It's a road/path course and flat most of the way, with just slight inclines in the second half of the race. Good supplies of water every few miles.Support on the course is thin, so some may like their own music to listen to. It's right along the sea front and this can bring some inclement weather. This year it was cold, wet and windy, but last year it was warm and sunny. Be prepared for all eventualities.A straightforward run with no hick ups. FCR events are always pretty good in my opinion. A good medal and t-shirt at the finish, with chip timing as standard.Give it a go, you'll probably enjoy it and may even PB.
  • Did the event in 2018

FCR Events have been recommended in the past, and this is the first one I have done. Registration is simple and the company offer various events all year through their website. I got to Blackpool early and found a car park close to the start line, which was a bonus after running 26.2 miles....The Marathon and Half Marathon started at the same time, but in opposite directions and was well sign posted. The race went along the promenade from the north end of Blackpool, past the Tower, attractions and the Pleasure Beach. You then turned around and ran back along to Bispham, then back again. The added bonus is that the event had a full road closure along the front so the course was traffic free. The support was quiet early on, (started at 09:30), and it was raining. Crowds steadily got busier and the weather slowly improved. The last few miles was run in glorious sunshine and was actually quite warm. Upon finishing, you were handed a bottle of water, banana, chocolate, tshirt and a medal. All in all, it was a great event and I will certainly look at doing more FCR events in the future. PS: The medal is a cracker!

A fantastic race that I hope to do year on year. This was my fourth time of doing this race and it’s just as good (if not better) every time. The course is a really tough one which changes slightly each year, so difficult to judge whether you PB’d or not.Ive made sure I set off in wave 1 each year, especially if you are going for a certain time as it reduces the amount of time you may have to wait for certain “obstacles”.I particularly like this as the “obstacles” are all natural and it is a half marathon.

Ran the half marathon distance on this foggy cold race circuit. This comprised 6 laps, I did find this abit monotonous as I am not a big fan of laps, I am glad I ran on a car racing circuit though.

The organisation cannot be faulted, from registering, to on the day organisation the only thing that would have helped me is something else apart from just water, which you get after each lap (I still cannot drink from a cup and run).

The course was more hilly than I expected with one particular steep hill, there wasn't much support, which I expected due to the location.

At the end you receive your medal, t shirt, protein bite and a banana. Parking is extremely easy and the rave photos are free, which is an added bonus.

A different race with challenge of hills and repeating nature out race circuit.
This year the half and endurance set off 5 min after the 10k meaning more quickly lapped. I personally found this added to the mental battle and disputed my own pace.
Arrival and bib collection very well organised.
Bit frustrating having to go entire pit length to get on track rather than side gate in previous years.
Overall enjoyed, likely will do for a 4th year.

I took advantage of the Manchester Marathon participant's rate of £20 for a session of up to 3.5 hours, which represented cracking value. Everything was very well organised, with energy gels available at registration and a nice medal, T-shirt and protein bar afterwards. The weather wasn't great to start with as the circuit was shrouded in fog, but nothing the organisers could do about that. Oulton Park is deceptively hilly, with 3 short but fairly steep climbs on each lap. A 10k, and a half-marathon were also being run at the same time, but the wide circuit meant plenty of space for everyone. There was one checkpoint, serving water, which seemed in plentiful supply. There was a smattering of supporters, most of them there with people who were running, but no crowds to speak of. That's not unsurprising given the fact the circuit is out in the country. Live tracking of results/laps was available both at the circuit and on the website. Al in all a lovely event and thoroughly recommended, certainly at £20.
