The Alton Water Run is a fantastic event, in spectacular scenery. It takes place at the beautiful Alton Water reservoir close to the Suffolk / Essex border. With runs to suit all ages and abilities, it is accessible to all. It is conveniently located, only 20 minutes from Colchester and 10 minutes from Ipswich.

Route information

The 2k is open to all, including children in pushchairs and teams in fancy dress.

The 5k run is a chip-timed race for children aged 11+ and adults. The route winds through woodlands and fields, a great alternative to Parkrun and fantastic for C25K runners.

The 10k run is a chip-timed race, attracting runners from across the region. This route crosses woodland, fields and country lanes. It can be a great training run as part of a marathon or half marathon programme, it can be a target race for those focusing on their 10k time, and it can be an idyllic off-road setting for runners hoping to complete this distance for the first time. It is open to those aged 15+.

The Alton Water Run has a festival feel with fabulous food stalls, children’s entertainment and side stalls, a café, picnic area and playground. There is also access to acres of beautiful Suffolk countryside for bird watching, kayaking, hiking and bike riding. There is limited parking. The Alton Water Run is supported by Anglian Water alongside many other regional businesses. The run is a registered charity, raising much needed funds for the small rural schools around the reservoir – Stutton Primary School, Tattingstone Primary School, Holbrook Primary School and Holbrook Academy.

Parking

Limited parking available on a first come first served basis. New car park location. Please arrive in plenty of time. Where possible, car-sharing is advisable.

From London

Travel clockwise or anticlockwise on the M25 to reach Junction 28 – East Anglia via the A12.

Travel north-east on the A12.

Approaching Ipswich, you will reach the A12/A14 junction. Take the 3rd exit onto the A14 towards Felixstowe.

Exit at the next junction for Ipswich Central & Docks.

At the top of the slip road turn left towards Ipswich.

Go down a steep hill past the ski slope on your right.

At the roundabout turn right onto The Strand. Go past Fox’s Marina on your left, go under the Orwell Bridge and through Freston. Pass The Boot public house on the right.

Take the right fork towards Holbrook & the Royal Hospital School.

Go through Holbrook: past The Compasses public house on your right, down the hill and up the other side. Go past the Royal Hospital School on the left.

A little further on, the entrance to Alton Water is on the right.

From the North

As an alternative to using the M25, take the A1(M), then at junction 14 join the A14 towards Cambridge and then Ipswich. At Ipswich pass under the A12 and exit at the next junction for Ipswich Central & Docks. Pick up the directions above.
