Did the race in 2019
This event has the potential to be very good but the organisation completely let it down. Parking charge £5 on top of entry fee then found that they then were letting cars in for free to speed the process up. Atmosphere in event village was good - music, professional looking finish area and some coffee and food stands. Toilet queues caused half hour delays to start. Half marathon course was good for views but didn’t actually get close to the castle itself and most runners distances came out at 12.7/12.8 miles. Need to consider staggered start as 800 people can’t all get over 4 stiles within a mile at the same time which caused more delays! (25 / 30 mins)Only water at aid stations and finish line. Would expect it on road half’s but not for trails! Some nibbles or sweets for runners would have been a boost. Volunteers were fab.

Whilst the course itself was both beautiful and challenging there were a few hiccups. There was a £5 parking charge which in view of the cost of the run itself was very expensive. This also caused delays for people in entering the parking area. I understand that the charging was abandoned in the end to speed up the process which was not fair on those who had already paid and had no way of getting a refund. There were plenty of toilets but because half were pink, queues formed for male and females, which caused delays and resulted in a 15 minute delay to the race start time. Also 800 runners set of and had to travel through 3 single file stiles/ bridges causing a delay of about 30 minutes. A lot of standing around whilst waiting your turn. The aid stations had plenty of water but no snacks unlike other trail runs. There was also no banana or energy bar available at the finish of the race.

In a word the hardest half I have ever completed. The only negatives I would make were the queues to get into the event which delayed the start of the race . Also getting over the stiles in the early part of the run caused big delays for those nearer the back of the field
