Route information
The swim will start at Uncle Tom's Cabin in Shoeburyness and is an out and back route in the Estuary. It is a 750m swim and will stay fairly close to the shore so less experienced or less confident open-water swimmers won't need to worry. The swimmers will be released in waves based upon predicted race times so there will not be too many people kicking around in the water at the same time.
The bike route is going back to the same as the Sundried Southend Triathlon 2017. The traffic lights will be marshalled and if you are caught at the lights in either direction a time allowance will be deducted from your overall ride time.
The run will be a beautiful, scenic stride through Gunner's Park. Home to the local Parkrun, this quiet park is gently undulating to add a little interest and lots of wildlife and scenery to keep it interesting. The park is completely traffic-free but will be open to the public on the day so watch out for dogs who may want to run up and say hi!

There will be plenty of free parking available near the race venue on the day, however due to the road closure for the race, some parking areas will become inaccessible once the road is closed.
There will be parking available in Uncle Tom’s Car Park on the south side of the seafront and Thorpe Esplanade Car Park on the north side of the seafront. Both of these car parks will provide ample parking which will be completely free of charge, however once the seafront road is closed at 1pm you will not be able to leave the car park until the road reopens.
**If you need to leave the race venue before the road re-opens at 6pm, please do not park in either of these car parks.**
If you do need to park somewhere that is accessible all day, you can park in Shoebury Common North car park which is adjacent to the Harvester restaurant and is accessible via Waterford Road which will remain open for the duration of the day.
Event day logistics
Registration is open from 12:00. Please allow plenty of time to arrive, register and set-up your bike. The safety briefing will happen 10 minutes before your swim start time on the beach.
If you have purchased the pre-registration, packs will be sent out 1 - 2 weeks before the race. We will email you with the information once it is available.
ALL ATHLETES HAVE NOW BEEN EMAILED THEIR INDIVIDUAL RACE NUMBERS AND WAVE ALLOCATION. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW YOUR RACE NUMBER EMAIL SOUTHEND TRIATHLON IMMEDIATELY.
Make sure your chip on your ankle is not covered by your wetsuit as this will prevent it from working properly. You will be starting the swim in the water. Upon hearing the start klaxon, you will begin your open water swim. There are safety and medical officers in the water in canoes should you get into trouble.
If you need to get the attention of a safety officer while in the water, lie on your back and raise one arm into the air. The medical team will then come to your assistance. If you see another swimmer in distress, alert the medical team in the water as soon as possible.
The swim is an out and back route. You will swim parallel to the shoreline, turn around at the buoy, and then swim back by the shoreline.
When you exit the water, you MUST either enter transition or alert a marshal if you do not wish to continue. If you leave the course without notifying a marshal we will search the water for you. We do not want to waste the time of the emergency services.
Marshals will guide you back to the transition area. You must not handle your bike without your helmet on. This is a British Triathlon rule and failure to comply will result in disqualification. Put your helmet on as soon as you get into transition and don’t take it off until you are ready to leave for the run. Just remember: first on, last off.
You must not mount your bike until you have passed the bike mount line, which will be marshalled. You must dismount your bike before the bike dismount line. Think of the transition area as a ‘no cycling zone’.
The bike course is 6 laps of the seafront road which is closed to traffic. Your turnaround point is a roundabout. Take care at the turnaround point and do not take the corner too fast. Your other turnaround point is coned. Again, please take this turn carefully. There will be marshals along the route to help you if you get into difficulty.
You must count your own laps.
Drafting is NOT allowed on this route. The minimum distance between you and the rider in front of you must be a minimum of 10m.
The run will take you into the Garrison area via New Barge Pier Road. Marshals will be present along the route so that you do not get lost.
You will run along the path and follow it around the lake. There will be marshals along the route to make sure you go the right way. You will do 3 laps of the lake. You will need to count your own laps.
Upon leaving the garrison area, you will turn towards the seafront where the finish gantry will be waiting for you.
Make sure you smile for the cameras, we are pleased to be offering free race photos for every competitor so do make the most of this!
Most importantly of all, have fun and enjoy!
FAQs
ARE WETSUITS COMPULSORY FOR THIS RACE?
In accordance with British Triathlon rules, wetsuits are compulsory when the temperature of the water is below 14 degrees Celsius. You can check the current temperature of the water here (however local water temperatures may be warmer and this will be tested 1 hour before the race starts). We strongly recommend all triathletes wear a wetsuit as it aids with buoyancy and protects against the elements.I’M INJURED.

CAN I GET A REFUND?
The refund cut-off for the 2019 Southend Triathlon is the 1st of March 2019. Refunds will be refused after this date for any reason, including injuries, illness, and unforeseen circumstances. This is a completely not-for-profit event with all proceeds going to Havens Hospices who provide end-of-life care for terminally ill adults and children and their grieving families. All refunds issued are taken directly out of the donation to this charity which is why we have such a strict cut-off date and refund policy. WHY CAN’
ChevronLeft
T I DEFER MY PLACE?
IT SEEMS UNFAIR. You have plenty of time to request to defer your entry to the following year. The cut-off for all deferrals and transfers of entry is 14 days before the event date and all deferred places become ineligible for refund. This is part of our Terms and Conditions which you read and understood before agreeing to when you signed up. Organising a triathlon is a logistically complicated process and it is impossible to process competitor changes after this cut-off date.

CAN I CHANGE MY WAVE?
There is ample opportunity to update your personal details, including your estimated swim time, before the event. After the waves have been allocated, it is impossible to move you. You are asked upon sign-up if there is anyone you’d like to be in the same wave as. You must have the same estimated swim time to be put in the same wave and you must specify as soon as you sign up. If you discover your actual estimated swim time is different to what you originally specified, you must alert the event organisers before the waves are allocated.WHY HASN’T MY FRIEND/

Yes. Southend Triathlon is a very popular event and we do sell out of places every year. If you missed out on a place, you can add your name to the waiting when it is avaible. We cannot guarantee you will get a place from the waiting list but you will be contacted if you do. I MISSED OUT ON A PLACE.

CAN I HIRE A ROAD BIKE ON THE DAY?
No. Unfortunately this is not something we are able to offer at this time. However, you do not need a road bike to be able to take part. In 2018 we had over 200 first-time triathletes, many of whom were on mountain bikes.I HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT SWIMMING IN THE OPEN WATER.This is understandable! We recommend getting in touch with our partners Tri N Swim Well who provide expert swimming advice and can offer 1-2-1 swimming lessons and coaching for those who have a fear of water or who have never swum in open water before.

CAN ME AND MY FRIENDS COMPETE AS PART OF A RELAY TEAM?
No. This is not something we can offer at this time.
