Experience the ultimate off-road trail running adventure in the Cotswolds with the Maverick Cotswolds X-Trail - set within Britain’s largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This is trail running at its most classically British. Rolling green hills, honey-stone villages, ancient woodland, and timeless countryside trails come together to create a course that feels as iconic as it is rewarding. Starting from the historic grounds of Sudeley Castle, this event delivers a true journey through the heart of the northern Cotswolds.

With five carefully crafted route options, there’s a challenge for every runner. From a demanding 50km Ultra for those ready to test full endurance, through a full Marathon and Half Marathon, down to shorter 11km and 7km routes that still capture the spirit of the terrain—each distance is designed to showcase the very best of the region while keeping things unmistakably Maverick.

The routes weave across the Cotswold Way and Winchcombe Way, linking together a rich mix of terrain: flowing bridleways, punchy climbs, ancient woodland trails, and open ridge lines that reveal sweeping views across patchwork farmland and hidden valleys. It’s a landscape that constantly shifts between runnable rhythm and honest effort, rewarding those who embrace the ups and downs.

Route information

Terrain: Hard-packed, established trails

All routes start within the grounds of Tudor Castle, an impressive 15th Century castle. The routes join multiple different Long Distance Paths including; Winchcombe, Gloucestershire and Cotswold Way. All three courses will take you on a rolling adventure showcasing the hidden gems of the northern Cotswolds.

Parking

There will be free parking available at the venue. It is recommended by the event organiser to car share where possible, to allow enough car park spaces for everyone.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Cheltenham Spa, with GWR running services from London Paddington - Cheltenham Spa taking around 2hr 15mins. If you would like to order a taxi from the station then you can reach a local service on 01242 242424.

All race packs will be collected on the day from registration. Please arrive with enough time to ensure you can register and warm up before the race start.

Age Requirements

Please note that all under 18's must be accompanied by a participating adult.

Water & Nutrition stations This will be a plastic-free event, so please be sure to bring your own reusable bottle or cup. Please note there is not water stop on the sprint route

Plastic-Free Event

Maverick Race is making every effort to make this season 100% plastic-free. For this reason, there will be no plastic cups at this event, so runners should bring a reusable cup or bottle with them to refill at the stations located on the route.

Maverick Race

Maverick Race is undoubtedly one of the best trail running organisers in the UK. The company was started down on the Jurassic Coast back in 2013. Since then they’ve delivered events which are guaranteed to take you to some of the most scenic locations in the UK. However, what really separates Maverick is their strive for inclusivity in the outdoors. From 6km entry level runs to 50km ultra marathons, there really is something for everyone. Afterwards you’ll find everyone hanging around, enjoying some fresh pizza, and speaking to like minded people with a shared passion for trail running.
