I have raced the 10k at this event every year since it started and it is a lovely flat and fast 10k  around the disused Waterbeach barracks airfield. This is definately a course where you could chase a PB due to the complete lack of elevation change and nice wide sweeping corners. As a result of the course you are on your own with just the other runners and the occasional marshall for company, but there is no chance of getting lost unless you decide to venture off the road!Water is provided at half way and a medal at the end. There are a number of shorter races, including a 100m race for toddlers which is great fun and I was able to accompany my three year old on his first ever running race which was great. All of the money raised from the event goes to support a local pre-school which is also nice.

Since the May day 5 run last weekend I haven’t been running well so I wasn’t feeling hopeful going into the 10k run this morning.  Although I was looking forward to it as I had been over to Alton Water once before on a training run and it is a nice route.  Dan was coming over with me, although he’d conveniently left it too late to get a place in the 10k run so he was just there to cheer me on.  I got there nice and early to collect my number and allow plenty of time for a visit to the portaloo

Hitchin Hard Half Marathon

This is a hilly, measured course on country roads. It follows an out and back route from Hitchin up to Preston via Offley Holes hill.

This beautiful but tough 10k starts in Hitchin Priory and follows the half marathon course up to Preston, with the hill into Preston the biggest challenge to overcome! This race was added to the Hard Half in 2015 for runners looking to enjoy a challenging 10k run.

This beautiful 5k starts in Hitchin Priory and follows the half marathon course for some of its distance. It's a more gentle route and gives you the chance to enjoy a good run through some of the most attractive parts of Hitchin and Gosmore.

Really loved this one. The scenery was beautiful from start to finish. Not too many marshalls but enough and all encouraging. Local support was fab. Very well organised from booking to race day and very straightforward on the day. Will definitely be back next year
  • Did the event in 2017

The race is organised by the Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse and the race start and finish is set in the fantastic grounds of Hitchin Priory. The majority of runners sign up for the half marathon so the 10k and 5k are a nice size to compete in. I would describe it as a local race feeling and not over commercialised. All well organised though from what is expected from a more commercialised organiser. I was originally signed up for the half marathon, however due to a hamstring injury which I recovered from I contacted the race team to downgrade to the 10k as I was still recovering and not race fit for the HM.  This was no problem even though it was only ten days from the race start.  The race organisers were more than accommodating in changing chips and race entries.  They were also willing to defer the entry to the following year if needed.  On the race organisers, they are fantastic in providing regular emails to update runners on event information. Parking was easy and plentiful by utilising the local town car parks (no more than a 10 min walk) with an early race start.  You could pick up your race numbers and chip either at the start or a day earlier in the local town centre, but there is no posting of race numbers.  At the start and finish area there is plenty for those remaining behind to be occupied with, bouncy castles for children and refreshments and music for others.  The starts of the races are staggered so the HM sets of first, then the 10k and then the 5k.  All are provided with a free warm up service if that flicks your switch.  If not the grounds of the priory allow you to warm up away from the crowds...The route is very hilly, the clue is in the title of the race, Hitchin Tough 10k.  Apart from the start of the race, where approximately the first mile is on country side grass hills and fields the rest of the race is on tarmac.  Then and up until approx three miles it is on a secluded countryside road with no traffic which allows you to choose your racing line.  It then enters a B Road where you are restricted to staying left on the road, which the race organisers have no control over as roads are not closed, but you battle the road camber which is quite severe in places.  A number of cars did pass during this section but they kept their speed to a minimum.  As there are no road closures there are no earphones allowed.  The cost of the 10k was £16 for non affiliated runners which is a fair price for a medal and goody bag.  The route had two water stations with wattle bottles with caps off handed out by ample race marshalls at each. The crowds in the country side dwellings were fantastic and well supported with local children and supporters handing out sweets etc.  A word of advice if you are considering running this race be aware of the hills for either the HM or 10K that share the same hills.  You will need to work on hills in your race training to meet your pace expectations for either events.  Luckily I had prepared enough to be competitive and finished third.  I was presented with a cash prize and a classy glass trophy, again a good reflection for a fair entry price.I would absolutely enter this race again with its good local feel factor and would recommend it.

Colour 5K is a crazy fun run that anyone can take part in and enjoy. It's all about COLOUR! Every kilometre you run or walk, you pass through a Colour Zone and meet a bunch of enthusiastic Colour Bandits who will do there best to cover your nice clean white t-shirt with coloured powder.

At each kilometre, a new colour is added until you reach the finish line and join up with all the other runners for the grand finale, 'The Colour Extravaganza'. This is a great event to enjoy with family and friends. There's also a mini 1k colour fun run for kiddies and parents.

  • Did the event in 2017

great event to do as a family, did this event for the first time with my 9 year old daughter and she enjoyed every second. Massive area to park, easy quick registration and overall well organised. Not enough toilets and they had run out of certain size tshirts so we had to have larger sizes than we would have liked but a minor gripe. Course wound around the grounds and gardens of Hoveyon Hall which is beautiful. Flat course, quite a lot off road. One water stop at half way. Plenty of opportunity to get covered in powder paint and a medal and water at the finish. Nice to do an event that everyone can take part in.

love love love this race.  2 lap 5km race which must be done in 20 mins. If you're not halfway in. 10 mins you are pulled out of the race. Sounds easy enough? Well the first half of each lap is uphill too. Huge support as 25000 people are waiting to see the city centre carnival go through straight after. If you are quick enough, do it.
