My second Half Marathon and a great course. Only downside of the route was that being a two lap along the seafront, approx 8 miles was running into the wind! It was tough going! Some up/down hills due to using the seafront and promenade but I was expecting this as have completed Clacton Parkrun a few times.

Well organised and very well supported by locals, especially at the finish area. Plenty of water supplied plus coke, jaffa cakes and jelly babies on the final lap.

The marshals were encouraging and helpful plus the course was well marked. As it got later in the day, the seafront did get a bit busier and some families were oblivious to the runners.

If you need to use the toilet before the start, join the queue early & bring loo roll! Only a couple of public cubicles were available.

Great medal, my first that wasn't round! Water, sweets and bananas provided at the finish.

This was the first time that I have ever ran a half marathon. The only real criticism I have of the clacton half is the placement and supervision of drinks stations. You pass drink stations 4 times, however, the placement of them means that you visit a drinks station twice within a couple of miles and then you have no water until the following station which is at the other end of the course. We also found that there were not enough volunteers on the drinks stations and you had to stop to wait to get a drink. Apart from that, it was generally a good experience and I will be back again next year - all be it with my own drinks!

A windy and tough race. It was harder than I thought but everything was well organised from water stations to marshal.Regarding free parking. I didn’t know until I arrived when a marshal pointed us to the free carpark. It wasn’t mentioned in the race pack unfortunately. I also like to say thank you to Martin Burke for giving me the bib nr I requested.

Great event if you like laps, which i hate very boring. Course itself and mile makers was rubbish, because it was laps first mile marker you saw was mile 8 WTF. very quiet country lanes which was great when you were on a main road they were shut off which was great, but laps are so boring, once you finished the laps you went back on the main road which was shut off to traffic to the finish with a nice little hill around mile 12.5 to finish you off . maybe for me if they could sort out the laps situation an event i would do again.

This was the second time I had run the Sleaford Half Marathon, and I enjoyed it just as much as last year. It is a relatively flat course, with the first and last couple of miles on closed roads, and the remainder on very quiet local single track roads. There are friendly marshals out on the course, mainly from the Sleaford Striders running club who organise the race, and there are 4 water stations which were definitely needed today in the heat. The entry fee is reasonable, you get a nice medal and finishers t-shirt, and there's a home made slice of flapjack when you cross the line. Oh, and an upgrade to race numbers with timing chip built in this year, rather than tying it on to your shoe. Great event - thanks to all the organisers and volunteers!
  • Did the event in 2017

This was my first ever half marathon, and I thought it was a great event. The entry price was reasonable, and the marshals and fellow runners were very friendly. As it was mostly on quiet country roads there are only small pockets of spectators to cheer you on. Overall, though I really enjoyed it and will be back next year.
  • Did the event in 2016

A half is a half right? That depends on how many other factors you're fighting against, that you're unable to control. The Sleaford half is without a doubt a popular event but with a few miles of mud swamps, raging winds and regular inclines, even the most durable runner was going to feel some discomfort in this years Sleaford half.I'll certainly try it again but I might pay closer attention to the weather forecast next time.

I ran the quarter marathon and the race was SO good. It was part pavement and part trail through fields. The event was very well organised and everything ran like clockwork. There was an excellent group warm-up beforehand and the general race atmosphere was so friendly and happy. The route was really well signposted and the marshals were extremely helpful and encouraging. The locals were very supportive, some of them out in their front gardens cheering us all on. The Scouts and Brownies at the water stations were brilliant.Afterwards we could help ourselves to bottled water, fruit and cereal bars and they were much needed after such a warm and humid run. Flaming June indeed! The race medals are really fab too.I’ll definitely be running this one again next year, and maybe it’ll be the half next time!Huge thanks to everyone involved in the organisation of this event and to all the volunteers and spectators. You’re all marvellous.I can’t recommed this event enough. Loved it!
  • Did the event in 2017

I have completed the 10K Bonfire Burn numerous times and always found it a nice, well organised race so I thought I'd give the half marathon a go. I found it to be just as well organised. Prior to the race, number collection was quick and simple. I didn't use the bag drop but there didn't appear to be any queues for it. And there was a nice, fun warm up! There was then a bit of a walk to the start, but as everyone walked over together there was a good atmosphere as we walked. The race then started in 2 waves with a 5 minute gap between the waves. This worked really well and there didn't seem to be any bunching up as people seem to have chosen the correct waves. The course is a multi-terrain course being a mixture of pavement and country pathways, thanks to the nice weather we've had recently the pathways were nice and solid. It's a nice flat course through the beautiful Cambridge countryside, this was a blessing as one part of the course is a dead straight section alongside the guided busway which would be mind-numbing if it wasn't for the lovely scenery. My tip for this section, look left and right lots on this section! You make your way back to Histon and end the race with a lap of the playing field, which gives you a good little burst right at the end with all the support there. I personally didn't use the aid stations as I was wearing a hydration pack but they seemed to be well stocked with water and well spaced apart. What really made the race for me was the support from both the local community and all of the volunteers. The marshals were really enthusiastic and motivating, and there were so many of them that I nearly lost my voice saying 'thank you marshal' to them all. But I'll say it again here, thank you! On completion of the race you are given a medal and a good quality technical t shirt. I thoroughly enjoyed this race from start to finish and will definitely be back to race it again.

Really loved this one. The scenery was beautiful from start to finish. Not too many marshalls but enough and all encouraging. Local support was fab. Very well organised from booking to race day and very straightforward on the day. Will definitely be back next year
  • Did the event in 2017

The race is organised by the Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse and the race start and finish is set in the fantastic grounds of Hitchin Priory. The majority of runners sign up for the half marathon so the 10k and 5k are a nice size to compete in. I would describe it as a local race feeling and not over commercialised. All well organised though from what is expected from a more commercialised organiser. I was originally signed up for the half marathon, however due to a hamstring injury which I recovered from I contacted the race team to downgrade to the 10k as I was still recovering and not race fit for the HM.  This was no problem even though it was only ten days from the race start.  The race organisers were more than accommodating in changing chips and race entries.  They were also willing to defer the entry to the following year if needed.  On the race organisers, they are fantastic in providing regular emails to update runners on event information. Parking was easy and plentiful by utilising the local town car parks (no more than a 10 min walk) with an early race start.  You could pick up your race numbers and chip either at the start or a day earlier in the local town centre, but there is no posting of race numbers.  At the start and finish area there is plenty for those remaining behind to be occupied with, bouncy castles for children and refreshments and music for others.  The starts of the races are staggered so the HM sets of first, then the 10k and then the 5k.  All are provided with a free warm up service if that flicks your switch.  If not the grounds of the priory allow you to warm up away from the crowds...The route is very hilly, the clue is in the title of the race, Hitchin Tough 10k.  Apart from the start of the race, where approximately the first mile is on country side grass hills and fields the rest of the race is on tarmac.  Then and up until approx three miles it is on a secluded countryside road with no traffic which allows you to choose your racing line.  It then enters a B Road where you are restricted to staying left on the road, which the race organisers have no control over as roads are not closed, but you battle the road camber which is quite severe in places.  A number of cars did pass during this section but they kept their speed to a minimum.  As there are no road closures there are no earphones allowed.  The cost of the 10k was £16 for non affiliated runners which is a fair price for a medal and goody bag.  The route had two water stations with wattle bottles with caps off handed out by ample race marshalls at each. The crowds in the country side dwellings were fantastic and well supported with local children and supporters handing out sweets etc.  A word of advice if you are considering running this race be aware of the hills for either the HM or 10K that share the same hills.  You will need to work on hills in your race training to meet your pace expectations for either events.  Luckily I had prepared enough to be competitive and finished third.  I was presented with a cash prize and a classy glass trophy, again a good reflection for a fair entry price.I would absolutely enter this race again with its good local feel factor and would recommend it.

I had a really enjoyable race at Newark, my preparation had been disrupted but managed to squeeze a PB. Initially I signed up thinking that the race was flat, I'd say that it was lightly undulating.

Having paced the race terribly, I had loads of encouragement as I came into the last three miles. Especially from a local runner who regaled me with tales of cold winter training, how enticing this was in the warm weather.

The t-shirt is a lovely shade of pink and I wear it with pride on club runs. Can't remember the goody bag, however am sure I ate my way through the contents on the way home.

  • Did the event in 2018

This is a nice little event. The field isn't too big (about 1200) and so it retains that local feel. The start is a little walk from HQ and they walk you in wave times. It worked well for race as I wasn't getting stuck behind people and didn't have loads overtaking me.The course is pretty flat with small inclines. You could definitely attempt a PB here. The medal was nice although the t-shirt is bright pink. My other half said I can't wear it out, haha.Overall a good event and would hesitate to come back.
  • Did the event in 2018

So ive done this race for the last couple of years and i'd say 2018 was the best year, little niggles have been fixed.Registration is super easy - pay the small fee, get sent e-mail and collect number of the day - very easy. Its a small field - 1000 maximum. I love the pre-start when you are put into time zone cues and taken to the start - really great idea and works very very well.Overall the course is flat with the odd slight incline, but other than that your by yourself in the countryside which is fine. Great marshall support and locals come out as well. Loads of water stations and couple of bottle stations this year which was a great relief and needed. Sponge station about mile 10 - then the last couple of miles are back into the finish and grass area which has been reduced as it was nasty before.Cracking t-shirt and medal and goody bag so all in all a great local race. Will certainly be back in 2019

Signed up for the Kimbolton half as there isn't a lot of choice for racing in August.Arrived early to find loads of parking available, directed by marshals. Registration took seconds, which gave me time to put the t-shirt they give you in the car. Came back to join the toilet queue which took a good 25 minutes (I've seen complaints in previous years so maybe something could have been learned by now) After a quick but informative race briefing, we were off, through the main town and quickly out into the country roads. This not a closed road event, but the roads are so quiet there don't tend to be any issues. The course, in line with online elevation chart provided, rises gently for six miles with a tougher climb at the end of mile six. This is followed by a gentle downhill for five miles, a short but tough climb at mile eleven  and then a drop into the finish around the castle and through the grounds. This makes it quite a tough course to pace, which can be compounded by the weather if its windy like in 2018.Finish area is good craic, after getting the medal, water, and banana, there are massages and other stands around, as well as the chiptiming tent where you can get your race time and position. This is not a pb course and I missed out on target time, but I would still happily recommend it to anyone in the area.
  • Did the event in 2018

I really enjoyed Kimbolton Half! Great value for money, easy to navigate, supportive marshals.I couldn't really hear the briefing from where I was stood, but figured I was following the crowd anyway. As roads weren't closed (not a complaint as it keeps the cost down) there were marshals on most crossing points, though it was a shame that some weren't covered. Luckily I and everyone arounnd me was ok, however for the future I would reccomend that runners have a telephone number or something on their bib so that the can contact event organisers in case of a medical issue. Some parts were out in the countryside and we didn't see a marshal for a mile or so -similar with the ambulance which I saw drive past twice.Apart from that it was a great event through the countryside, medla and t-shirt for finishing!
  • Did the event in 2018

I have run this race three times before, and I love it. I grew up in Kimbolton, so am very surprised by how many hills the organisers have eeked from a notoriously flat county, but they add to the challenge of the day. The organisation is excellent, and the marshalls are supportive as you run along. I loved the designated litter drop-zones this year, as it meant that the rest of the course stayed fairly litter-free. I will definitely be back next year.

Toughish undulating road race with a testing hill in the final mile, so not a PB course, but very good for seeing where you're at. Closed road for the first and last mile or so, otherwise open, but well organised and marshalled by runners. Deserved more entries than it had, and numbers should grow year on year as word gets around.

I completed the spring run in 2018 and it’s beautiful. The course is well marshalled and there’s water stations throughout. You get jelly babies at registration and chip timing which gives you a time almost instantly. A flat and fast course with marshals stopping traffic at the only road cross.I was a little disappointed with the entry price as for £20 you only got a run of the mill medal (I’m not even sure it says Stanwick Lakes on it) and a banana. It was then also £3 to park - perhaps a discount on this would be good.

After running the Rutland a couple of times I decided to step up to the marathon at this venue.
As usual I arrived in plenty of times so both car parks were empty (£4 or £8). I went for the nearest which was the dearest but in my views more practical.
All the registration was process was great. Small note: the start was slightly delayed 10min to make sure everyone had parked & registered.
The venue is superb and the route challenging. Great to see that most of the cattle grids were filled in or side gate open. As a tip on the course...if doing the marathon save something for the second half...the route round the peninsula is hilly!
My only complaint (very minor) is the lack of saulty options at the very regular feed stations. The volunteers were absolutely fab as were the marshals and organising team...I’ll be back!
  • Did the event in 2017

Fantastic event and my first half marathon.
  • Did the event in 2017

A nice location but the race is hampered with setting the half and full off at the same time. This made the first 7-8 miles extremely congested running along a very narrow track which formed the out and back section!!

Central part of the race was better once you had left the half mara course behind.

Good race village and a unique medal.

Enjoyable run - big hill at 7/8 miles but crowd were out in support to make it easier. Well marshalled too, though Simply Run don’t make things as easy/smooth as they could in terms of pre-race info etc.
  • Did the event in 2017

Firstly - this is a lovely race. The atmosphere is friendly and the route is good with excellent course support. The finish line at the football group works well and has a lively feel to it. The course is advertised as ‘fast and flat’ which it is not!! - There are some hills along the route.
  • Did the event in 2017

Well organised first year for this event. Interesting closed road  course through Ipswich town then out on to the Shotley peninsula, undulating with a tough hill at mile 7 and warm conditions added to the challenge. Water stations every 3 miles, well marshalled and good crowds out on the course, so little to fault. Usual finishers bag, t-shirt, medal with some freebies, so overall good value for money in my view.

  • Did the event in 2018

Enjoyable, low-key local event. Well organised, mostly flat course (as is typical of the Fens). Would definitely consider doing it again.
  • Did the event in 2018

This is a very enjoyable 41 mile race from Ely cathedral to Cambridge and back. Considering that the price of entry (£35 for the ultra) is comparable to many half marathons this is a great fun and good value race which is a good introduction to ultra running (it was my first - but won't be my last!).

There is plenty of free parking within easy walking distance of the start (my car park of choice was downhill from the cathedral which lead to a painful hobble back after the finish!), the registration was quick and easy and the race briefing was short but contained all of the required information. The aid stations were every 6-8 miles but were well stocked (water, squash, coke, gels, sweets) and staffed by friendly and encouraging volunteers. The course is mostly along cycle route 11 and where it deviated from the cycle route plenty of signs were in place to help.

The route is ~70% along quiet roads or gravel tracks so road shoes are definitely needed. Being in the fens the route is very flat (except for the last 200m up to the cathedral), but the benefit of this is that you can see Ely cathedral from about 7 miles to go.

A lovely medal (immediately commandeered by my kids), t-shirt and food (bananas, sweets etc.) and water were waiting for us at the end of the race, along with the ability to print out your result. For £35 it is hard to see a race of this length being better value.

There are so many interesting races at this time of the year, but I will definitely be back if I can make time for it in the future.

  • Did the event in 2018

A race advertised as a fun adventure, and indeed it was. A fairly flat and fast course encompassing the Fens. A very blustery day, which didn’t help my poorly chest, but overall good running conditions. A out and back route following cycle path 11. A few event sign posts and some of the junctions, in my opinion, there could have been a couple more at various points.

A cup-less event so a race vest/hydration pack essential, however there was one aid stations perfectly at the marathon turn around point, providing some essential energy boosters, coke, sweets etc.

Parking was easy, a few options to chooE from, the closest being a few minutes from the cathedral. Perfect for post event when the legs are stiff.

At the end there was the opportunity to type in your bib number in order to obtain your official result, which I really liked as it saves waiting for online events.

I was fortunate enough to come home 4th despite not feeling great. I would definitely recommend this event, you won’t be blown away with amazing views the whole way round. But you get a friendly fairly cheap, well organised event which has the potential for a PB. Go for it, sign up

Well organised and 2nd time I’ve ran this race. Local to me and good finish with parking etc
  • Did the event in 2018

A good half to do as a first race, very well organised and well marshalled. The t shirt and medal was good and plenty of drink stations of water, jelly babies and gels. It would probably be better if bottles as easier I find, but that’s just my opinion.
  • Did the event in 2018

A great local half marathon on roads and trails around Northampton. The route has a mixture of both town centre and country lane running, as well a a little throuygh a dull industrial estate, but finishes at Delapre country park in front of the beautiful Delapre Abbey.

Registration is simple and at 600 entrants its easy to arrive at the start line 20-30 minutes bfefore race start (9:30 am) and have a stress free arrival.

The route is undulating with one reasonably tough hill coming out of the industrial estate around 7 miles and a few other more gradual ones once you get out into the country lanes.

Check points are every 3-4 miles (probably not frequent enough if its a hot day) and have water and a few gels. The entire route is very well marshalled. Very nice medal to finish and a few vendors at the race village although the only other 'freebie' is a bottle of water.

This is one of the flattest CTS runs, but some beach sections towards the end are definitely tough on the legs. Very well organised, as always, and lots of food and water stations along the course. The atmosphere at the end of the race isn't amazing - I wish there was some music and/or a food stand or two!

As a stneots local, and ran this race 3 times (each time PB), and trained on this route a few times before a race, I am very familiar with the course, and love every aspect of it..(and the hill climbs) it is a great course to run. Slight incline at the start, Cromwell rd/potton rd, then slight descend to abbotsley for nearly 3 miles, the up the little sharp hill on the right onto pitsdean road, then a slight incline heading towards crossroads, turning left to be greeting by a long descend, then to be tormented by the steepest incline of the run, just after mile 4, which has broken a few runners in the past. Up the incline meandering through turning right toward Waresley on manor farm road. Up and down a few hills, then turn left at waresley, down a slight descend for a quick mile before turning left onto gransden rd nr mile 7. Heading to abbotsley, turn left bk on pitsdean rd, to crossroads to turn right for a 3 mile slight descend to the finish.
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

The course is very rural in a good way. A little undulating and quiet in places but on a nice day it's great.I would recommend checking the weather beforehand because if it's a wet and windy day it would be tough. In terms of running it, once you've made it to 10 miles it's pretty much all down hill, so once you get there you know you've made it. Make sure you save a little bit for the last 3 miles so you can get the most out of it. There are also plenty of water stations.
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

Nice fast finish. Pretty much downhill from mile 10.Leave plenty of time for parking it took a long time to get into the college.Overall excellent event that I would recommend. My only criticism is that there were no age-graded awards or prizes. I was too male 40 and got nothing. Some recognition would be nice for us oldies,

Really like this race. Taken part twice now. 2018 i beat my PB on it due to starting with a pacer who are excellent. Views are nice throughout even through the country lanes and up the hills.
Its not a flat course but quite challenging. Crowd support was great and kept me going throughout, especially near the end towards the finish.

Has been hot and the lolly at the end really helps.

    Will be back in 2019

  • Did the event in 2018

Great event to make my debut as a pacer for Xempo. Really hot conditions weren't an issue as their was plenty of water stations on course.

Only minor issue was that the route itself didn't go into the beautiful city instead flowing down country lanes meaning there was very few supporting stations.

The event village itself was great. Plenty of people cheers at the start and the finish and nothing beats having beats getting a cold ice lolly handed to you as you cross the line (well maybe a cold beer would).
