Founded in 1979, the Shamrock Run Portland is the largest running and walking event in Oregon and is the third largest running event in the western United States. In 2020, 25,000 participants will celebrate the 42nd edition of the event on Sunday, March 15th at Waterfront Park in downtown Portland.

The Shamrock Run offers competitive races at 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), 8 kilometers (4.97 miles), 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) and a half-marathon (13.1 miles) with a field limit of 3000 runners. Shamrock also offers the Shamrock Stride – a 4-mile fitness walk – and the “Leprechaun Lap,” a 1km (0.6-mile) run/walk for children age 10 and younger.

Shamrock Sunday activities in the finish area include the Widmer Brothers Brewing beer garden, complimentary hot soup and an entertainment stage with performances from local musicians. Music is featured at the starting line and along the Shamrock routes.

Shamrock Weekend kicks-off with the Shamrock Run Fitness Fair. This two-day event at the Oregon Convention Center on March 13th and 14th is in conjunction with Shamrock participant bib number and t-shirt pickup. The Fitness Fair features more than 80 running and fitness exhibitors, celebrities and mascots, contests and give-aways and a Leprechaun Lane area for kids. More than 25,000 people attend the Shamrock Fitness Fair, presented by Moda Health.

The primary beneficiary of the event is Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation, which has been affiliated with Shamrock for the past 22 years.

Portland Shamrock Run routes

Shamrock Half Marathon:
With a course containing minimal turns and plenty of downhill, the Half boasts a truly picturesque journey into the famous Terwiliger Hills - now with only two road crossings.

Shamrock 15k:
The 15K route features much of the Half route, including plenty of downhill and the final stretch into Terwiliger Hills.

Shamrock 8k:
The 8K contains an out and back route, beginning at SW Pine and culminating at SW Naito. With one solitary turn on the route congestion will be minimised for those tackling this one

Shamrock 5k:
5k runners can expect to be going off first, again with only two on-couse road crossings and one turn around point. The finish is at SW Naito and Yamhil

Kids Leprechaun Lap 1K:
The Kids Fun Run is an out and back along SW Naito.

Event Details

  • A short-sleeve souvenir Shamrock Run T-shirt
  • A 12-ounce pour of Widmer Brothers beer (for participants 21 and older)
  • A 6-ounce serving of Shamrock Irish soup
  • A commemorative Medallion (All Participants Except Leprechaun Lap)
  • A Leprechaun Lap Cape (Leprechaun Lap only)

All Shamrock events (except the Leprechaun Lap) will be started with a “release and hold” system. Runners are to line up behind their appropriate per-mile pace sign held overhead in the assembly area. Runners will be released in groups of 500 to 1000 participants every 30 to 90 seconds to allow the field to spread out and to minimize congestion along the route, especially in the first mile.
The chip-timing system will not record a starting time for a runner until that runner has crossed the timing mats at the start line. Time spent waiting to cross the start line is NOT included in the scored finish time for a runner.
All race distances are USATF-certified.

Here are the ways to get your bib number and t-shirt before race day:

Join a Team of 12 or more! Team captains get lots of perks, and team members get all bibs and t-shirts shipped to the Team Captains so you get yours before anyone else during the first week of March.
Non-team members can get their bibs and t-shirts at the Shamrock Run Fitness Fair, presented by Moda Health, in Exhibit Hall A/A1 at the Oregon Convention Center. For runners, your timing chip is attached to the back of your bib number.
Have a friend pick-up your bib for you at the Shamrock Fitness Fair (non team members only). If you need a friend or family member to pick up your bib, please be sure you have:
Signed the electronic waivers in your account.
Provided them a copy of your registration confirmation email (email copy is fine).
Provided them a copy of your photo ID (photo via email or text is fine).

Specific timings of each of the events have yet to be decided, but will be sent out closer to the event.

There are no specified requirements but please do wear your Irish green if you can!

There are great opportunities to spectate all along the course - just make sure that if you plan on driving you allow plenty of time before the race start to avoid the road closures - driving even on the morning before the race is hugely discouraged.

If you have a group of 15 or more that is interested in raising funds by working at the 2019 Shamrock Run, please contact: [email protected]

Tasks may include serving as course marshals, site-prep, staffing at food and refreshments, at the start or finish line and other event tasks on event weekend.

Every group worker receives a special Shamrock Run T-shirt or poncho.

How Do I Exchange My T-shirt for a Different Size?

Go the the T-shirt pick-up area at the Shamrock Fitness Fair or take your shirt to Waterfront Park on Shamrock Sunday to the T-shirt canopy and make the exchange. But, we cannot guarantee that we will have the size shirt you want on Shamrock Sunday.

Can I Wear Headphones on the Course at Shamrock?

Yes. But, please stay alert. Although the streets are closed to vehicle traffic, sometimes emergency vehicles must get on or across the routes.

Can I Run With a Baby Jogger or Stroller?

Running with a baby jogger or a stroller at Shamrock is NOT permitted. But, walking with a baby jogger or a stroller is allowed, although only in the Shamrock Stride.

Can I Run or Walk With My Dog at Shamrock?

Shamrock Run is a very large community event for all ages. Please help us keep our participants, spectators, volunteers AND your pet safe and stress-free by leaving your pets at home on this Sunday morning (except for certified assistance dogs/animals).

Where Can I Store My Warm-ups During the Event?

We will have a large canopy in Waterfront Park near The Morrison Bridge — identified as “Gear Check” — where participants can leave their warm-up clothing for safe-keeping during the event. Please do not check backpacks, keys, wallets, purses or other valuables, however. The gear check service is for warm-up clothing only and it is free. The event provides the bags for gear check.
