Route information
The GRIM is one of the original muddy/trail/obstacle races with a history that dates back to 2003. After a COVID absence in 2020 it bounced back strongly in 2021, growing to more than 1000 runners taking part in the event in 2022. Now with two events in the series, we expect Grim Challenge popularity to continue to grow in 2023.
The event returns in 2023 in much the same format: the route takes you over an Army vehicle testing ground in Aldershot with two distance options, a main race 8-miler and a lighter version over a shorter 4-mile course.
Although the GRIM is a tough trail race in which you will certainly find yourself at times cold, wet and dirty, it is not an obstacle race, it's a running event. We don't build any ramps, walls or swings on the course.
All the obstacles are natural, formed by tanks driving over the route or by incessant rain in the weeks leading up to the event. Of course at this stage, we can't guarantee the rain but it's never let us down before. In a few places you will be crawling under cargo nets or wading through waist high water.
The distance may not sound daunting but don't take this lightly, on a cold December morning, the GRIM is a challenge and you will think it is aptly named when you have run it.

Absolutely brilliant day, but my one constructive feedback would be the PA system used during the warm-up and race start. This was FAR too quiet, meaning that unless you were right tat the front of the pack, you couldn't hear it. Either a louder system, or more speakers next time would be great!

Had a great time - I got a bit confused with the mile markers though, they seemed to be all over the place.

This was my 10th Grim and was better organised than last year, with the extra car park. The Marshalls were great and supportive. For any newbies, you will be wet and cold by the finish so have stuff ready to get dried and changed as soon as you can.

I started the race in the front and ran the first half of the race with another runner, vying for fifth place with him. Due to being near the front of the field we could not see any other runners in front or behind us after the first three miles or so. Somewhere around the five mile point (still not totally sure where), we both missed a split in the marked route. This is despite checking with each other and with those marshalls visible along the route. Rather abruptly, we then arrived at the finish line, still only 5.5 miles in according to our GPS. Not wishing to cross the finish line early, we flagged down the announcer, who then went to find a marshall. This took around two minutes. The marshall was insufficiently familiar with the route, so she went and found the Course Director. This took around a further two minutes. The Course Director could not say where we had gone wrong, and suggested we retrace our steps. Neither my fellow runner nor I found this to be a satisfactory answer, as no one could tell us for sure where we had gone wrong. At this stage our position in the race was well and truly lost, and as we were running the race competitively both decided to DNF rather than continue for at best a placing much further down the field.Unfortunately I am once again disappointed by the inadequately clear course marking, particularly when moving at speed and without lots of fellow runners around you to take a squad average. The figure of eight shape to the south of the race village has caught me out in previous years, as the four, eight and (in previous years) sixteen mile routes all converge on an open area with numerous tracks. In a previous instance I was fortunately running with a larger pack, so we were able to correct our error with minimal time lost. Having not raced competitively in some time I was greatly looking forward to Grim and my experience on Saturday has left a rather bitter taste. I will not be wasting my time or money entering Grim again, doubtless the runner I was racing on Saturday feels the same way. This is a shame as Grim was my first proper trail race back in 2006 and I have been able to attend most years since. For the benefit of those others who will continue entering Grim in future I would implore you to improve the quality of the route marking and the situational awareness of the marshalls.

It’s an utterly bonkers event, who’d have getting so cold, wet and muddy could be so much fun? 2 distances to choose, bot with ample amounts of cold water and mud to wade through. Organisation this was much better.

Loved this event. But it is not for the faint hearted as there are a lot of puddles. With a lot of freezing cold, muddy water!
