Route information
Running through the woods at night with a head torch is a unique and wonderful experience for runners, which will feel both wild and peaceful at the same time. Your senses will come alive, as you race along with the sound of hooting owls and the sight of deer eyes reflected from your head torch.
The race is suitable for runners of all abilities and head torch novices, everyone is welcome!
The Moon Runner is a winter event which means a crisp ground frost is common. Moonlight will break through the trees, creating an incredible atmosphere while you run along the sparkling surface. Runners will be able to embrace the feeling of remoteness and exhilaration that comes with running in the dark.
Hamsterley Forest is the largest forest in County Durham and covers 4900 square acres. The route will follow the tracks and trails within the beautiful forest park. It will be undulating in parts but you will be rewarded by the scenery and if you're lucky you may also spot some local wildlife.
The forest is an ideal location for trail running with a mixture of well marked footpaths, forest trails and woodland tracks. This event is perfect for both experienced trail runners and anyone new to the sport.
The weather can be very cold at this time of the year, so runners are encouraged to bring a hat, gloves and a warm jacket so you can enjoy your soup and roll after the race.
The race starts and finishes at the Café car park which is near to the main car park.
