The south coast's most epic event. This is the perfect event for families with races on offer for everyone. The course is really fast and flat and so there is no better opportunity to smash that PB than at this event. It is super friendly, well-organised and there is an amazing atmosphere.

THE COURSES

10 Mile

Starting and finishing on Clarence Esplanade in Southsea, the fast and flat course takes you through Old Portsmouth, home of the Portsmouth Cathedral, before entering the Historic Dockyard. Here you’re granted permission to run past the Royal Navy’s current naval ships, and some of the most famous in the world – including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose museum.

After exiting the Dockyard you reach the halfway point on Winston Churchill Avenue, before making your way back towards Southsea Common, where you’ll complete the final two miles on the scenic seafront.

The course is steeped in history dating as far back as 1212 and features charity cheering points, boost zones, bands on the run and unrivalled support from local residents and spectators.

5K

This fast and flat 5k course is perfect for beginner runners or those who are looking for a personal best across a shorter running route. Runners, joggers and walkers have the bonus of the scenic views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight as they start on Clarence Esplanade. They then head past Clarence Pier and Southsea Common before crossing the finish line close to the Pyramids Centre on the sea front.

Mini and Junior Course

Both the Junior and Mini routes start on Clarence Esplanade, opposite the Skate Park. From here, all the runners head west past the D-Day museum and Blue Reef Aquarium.

Mini runners then turn right into Serpentine Way while Junior runners head up to a turnaround point next to Mozzarella Joes. Both runs then head up Serpentine Way and down Lady’s Mile to reach Avenue De Caen. The kids then head for the finish back on Clarence Esplanade.

With a nautical themed fancy dress, it’s a fun way to get your kids excited about running and a chance to experience their own finish line moment and wear their medals with pride.

Kit List

KEEP IT LIGHT

Costumes can range from tutus to morph suits, a pantomime horse to a giant whoopie cushion. Believe us when we say, we think we’ve seen them all. But one good piece of advice is whatever you choose, try to minimise the weight you’re carrying. The heavier the costume, the more effort it will take to get around. Be wary of donation buckets too - these can get heavy. So, you could try printing your fundraising link or text details for how people can donate online on your costume.

AIRATE

If your costume covers you head to toe in lots of fabric, then try to cut holes in your armpits and the back of your knees to keep the air flowing. It will be good to take advantage if there is any breeze on event day.

Spectators

This is a great spectator's event. The atmosphere is amazing.

I have done the Great south three times. I love this race and would recommend it. My children have also done the junior race on the Saturday. Hotels are great. We stay at the holiday Inn, and I can leave my car in their car park until I have finished my run on the Sunday. Lovely run, lovey views.

I run in the 1990 first Great South in Southampton after which the event came and remained in Portsmouth. Since then I marked notable birthdays e.g. 60th & 65th. The course scenery, location and atmosphere is spectacular. If travelling to the event I would recommend having a long weekend & making the most of the location. Good event for accompanying non runners.

An awesome event with such history - amazing to see people who have run every single year still doing the full 10 miles! The course is fantastic and the event really well organised from start to finish - loads of entertainment points, booming tunes, cheer zones and tonnes of support. Add this one to your calendar or bucket list!

I love this event. It is one of my annual races now. The route is flat wirh a nice sea view at the start and end of the course. There is plenty on offer at the race village with plenty of refreshments stalls and post race massage. The volunteers are very helpful in helping you find your way around.

The event has a great atmosphere along the whole route. It’s a flat route so perfect for PBs and running through the dockyard is amazing. Parking is available on the common and the Park and Ride can be a bit hit and miss, but that aside, it’s an annual challenge for me and my husband, and now our 3 year old will be joining this year for the Mini.

Everything about this Run was how it was described and more so much so I went straight home and signed up with the lovely ladies I ran it with last year for this year. We have also sold (as in signed up) it to some other people too!
The only little blip on the day was one of my friends was given a medal for the wrong race but was exchanged straight away to the correct one.
The organisation, marshals, atmosphere and support from the crowds was awesome, can’t wait for this, this year as the training for me hasn’t been easy but I know on the day all of the above will get me over the finish line!
