Bath Half Marathon routes

Although many would consider Bath to be hilly, this course is fast and flat, avoiding all of the hills surrounding Bath.

The route straddles the Avon and is on completely closed roads. The first mile is a gentle downhill, followed by two laps after Churchill Bridge. From there, the road is gently rolling up to the beginning of the dual carriageway. A final rise up Pulteney Road culminates with a spectacular finish down Great Pulteney Street.

There will be 7 water stations in total and 7 local bands playing at various different points along the route.

All runners will need to remember their race number and timing chip on the day of the event (this should have been sent in advance).

Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time in order to drop your bag and warm up.

Competitors will be allocated into one of 8 start areas (based on predicted finish time). The fastest runners will start earlier, the slower later. You'll be able to tell which route leads toward your start area, as the route signage colour will match that of your race bib.

If you want to change your start bay on race day you may do so, however bear in mind you are only able to move backwards to a 'slower' bay, not forwards. The start pens usually open around 10am.

The race is renowned for a brilliant atmosphere, as spectators can easily move around large portions of the course thanks to its lapped nature. Remember there will be plenty of on course entertainment for spectators to enjoy too. A great spot to watch runners passing can be found by Churchill Bridge, which is often packed with spectators.

Further recommended viewing points can be found at:

  • Start and Finish at Great Pulteney Street
  • Green Park
  • Queen Square
  • Royal Victoria Park
  • Station Road
  • Weston Lock Retail Park

The race couldn't be held every year without the help of hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers. Roles such as route marshals, public enquiries, drink stations, finish station and more are on offer. To find out more and to register your interest, visit

  • Did the Half Marathon in 2013

The absolutely single and only flaw in this race is that its lapped and its obviously a bit more fun not running two laps. Other than that the atmosphere and organisation is epic and bath is SO beautiful!! For those who know it well it seems insane that this course is flat (bath itself is pretty hilly) but it really is - theres one small undulation but it really is fast and flat. Definitely a great race to do and will do it again
