Route information

Elysium Healthcare Great West Run Half Marathon takes an exciting 13.1 mile route through the heart of Exeter. This route has it all; a journey through the city centre, followed by pretty country lanes, stunning views, and a fantastic stadium finish.

There will be 6 drinks stations on route.

The 10k route follows the first and final 3 miles of the Half marathon route.

The Community Mile is designed to encourage first-time runners, families, and friends to come together and challenge themselves to get active for a fitter, healthier life.

COVID-19 Information

Although it cannot be predicted where we will be as a nation by May, the event organisers have put well thought-out, flexible and responsive measures in place to ensure the Elysium Healthcare Great West Run is a COVID-secure event, as other events have already shown is possible.

By Car

There is no official race parking. If you are coming by car you are encouraged to car pool, arrive early and use the 'Pay and Display' parking in the city centre. There will be shuttle tickets available on the Great West Run's website, so please purchase one of these if you plan on getting a shuttle to the race venue.

Shuttle Bus

Shuttle Bus tickets are available to purchase at registration, please select the ticket including the shuttle bus return.

Buses will depart from Exeter city centre (original) bus station from Stand 7 between 07:00 and 07:45. Runners are encouraged to arrive early as this is a popular option and will be busy. The last bus will depart at 07:45 and will arrive at the arena at 08:00.

There will be a return service pick up from Whipton Village shops on Pinhoe Rd. from 11:15.

Event day logistics

07:00 First shuttle bus to the Event Village

07:30 Event Village opens

07:45 Last shuttle to the Event Village

09:00 Half Marathon starts

09:30 10k starts

12:30 Course closes

*Participants falling behind the pace required to finish by 12:30 will be asked to move to the pavement.

Race Packs

Race packs will be sent out to participants 2 weeks before race day. This pack will include your race number, bag label, and race instructions.

Race numbers will have your timing chips attached and must be attached to your front with 4 safety pins. Please ensure you have filled out the personal details on the reverse o the number and that your number is clearly visible to the medical team.

Cut-off Times

Runners will have 3 hours to complete the Half Marathon as this is when the roads will reopen and must reach the 4-mile mark within 1 hour 10 minutes.

Any participant after this time will be redirected right along Cowley Bridge Road to follow the remainder of the route along the footpaths.

Trees Not Tees

This event is proud to be partner of Trees Not Trees, who will be planting a tree for every participant instead of race t-shirts.

Bag Drop

There will be a bag drop located within the event village, which is left at the owner's risk. Please use the baggage label in your race pack when using the bag drop.

Start Assembly

Runners should line up in the appropriate zone relating to your estimated finish times.

Prizes

There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place men and women who will be awarded on the main stage post race. These prizes will be determined based on gun time, in accordance with UKA Athletics Rules.

Did the race in 2022

The day was really good but the fact I couldn't find where to get the return shuttle bus was a big disappointment. It wasn't where we were told it would be because people were still running there, I asked every steward and some said to keep walking up the road which I did but still couldn't find where to catch it. Most stewards I asked didn't have a clue where it was leaving from. In the end I had to walk 3 miles back to my car. I had just run 6 miles and it was very hot so I didn't appreciate then having to walk another 3 miles when I had paid for the shuttle bus. I wasn't the only one either as I met others who didn't know where to catch it from. One guy had done the half marathon and was really struggling to walk due to pain but had no choice but to walk back into the centre.

I was surprised by how many people came to support the runners. This was my first half marathon and I was at the back most of the way around but there were still hundreds, if not thousands, of people cheering me on. Brilliant experience.

They could improve system for toilets at the start. Taking away T-shirts and replacing them with plastic bottles is not sustainable.£16 for an emailed photo🤣 Other than that route is good and plenty of support and water along the way

Did the race in 2019

This year's baggage lorrys were a great improvement. (thank to the scouts who were very quick at finding bags). The course is, great a lite challengeing in places which I like. All the marshals are very very good. Loads of encouragement from the local people. I would recommend. Being in October it means it is a little cooler which is great.

It was a very rainy day, but great course, well organised and great event support and facilities.Needed more toilets!
